Postdoctoral Research Associate in Trauma Bioinformatics

This post is part of a dynamic collaboration between the Centre for Trauma Sciences and the Centre for Translational Bioinformatics. The Centre for Trauma Sciences is a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, scientists, nurses and support staff, delivering a programme of research relating to traumatic injury, haemostatic resuscitation and optimisation of patient outcomes. The Centre for Translational Bioinformatics is a team of computational biologists, software engineers and data scientists located within the Digital Environment Research Institute (https://www.qmul.ac.uk/deri/) at Queen Mary University of London. Our teams also partner with a national network of researchers, clinician researchers and industry to translate biomedical data into the clinic.

We are seeking an experienced biomedical data scientist / computational biologist to join our highly collaborative team at QMUL. PhD (or close to completion) or research qualification/experience equivalent to PhD level in the relevant subject area for the research programme is essential. Demonstrable experience in computational biology, computer science, statistics or related field. Essential experience in scripting languages to support data science, e.g. Python & R. Desirable experience in notebooks, markdown and revision control software such as GIT & Jupyter.

The Centre for Trauma Sciences research team (www.c4ts.qmul.ac.uk) provides the framework for trauma sciences research that aims to understand the biology of severe injury and drive improvements in clinical outcomes. We have strong links with other groups across a range of scientific disciplines both within and beyond QMUL and are a core member of the International Trauma Research Network that includes academic partners across Europe and North America. Our highly developed human discovery infrastructure enables recruitment of 200-300 severely injured patients annually as part of the ACIT study. We also have a well-established experimental modelling group with full ethical approvals in place for all proposed human and animal studies. The Centre is intimately linked to the Royal London Hospital Major Trauma Centre, which is among the highest-volume trauma centres in Europe and widely considered to be at the forefront of contemporary trauma care.

At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable. Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers. We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities. Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
