Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow in Chemistry (Fixed Term)

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral research associate/fellow in analytical chemistry with an interest in new approaches to monitoring the manufacture of organic chemicals. The post will involve applying a range of spectroscopic techniques to new flow reactor designs developed at the University of Nottingham. The vision of the project is to apply continuous reactors, including continuous photochemistry, electrochemistry, and thermal chemistry to transform how fine chemicals and medicines are manufactured [see for example APPLIED SPECTROSCOPY (2022) 76, 38-50; ORGANIC PROCESS RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT (2025) 29, 34-47; (2024), 28, 1917-1928; (2022) 26, 1145−1151; (2021) 25, 1619-1627 (2021) 25, 2052-2059; (2020), 24, 201-206; (2018) 22, 595-599]. The post is available to start immediately and all projects should result in high impact publications.

The post will involve lab-based research, based in Nottingham. The successful candidate will have a first degree in chemistry or chemical engineering and have or be in the process of obtaining a related PhD and a track record of successful research. They will be computer literate with strong communications skills and a proven ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. They will be excited by variation rather than repetition and gain satisfaction from finding ways they can contribute to the success of these cutting-edge projects. Specific skills needed are experience in chemometrics, spectroscopy and product characterization techniques including NMR. Experience in advanced processing of analytical data would be desirable.

The person appointed will join a multidisciplinary team working at the University of Nottingham in Chemistry and Engineering. The projects are led by Professor Mike George and also involve Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff (Chemistry).

The position will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 18 months to start as soon as possible. The hours of work will be full-time (36.25 per week).

  • Prepare high quality supporting information for publications resulting from the project.

Candidates must:

  • Hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in physical chemistry, chemical engineering or physics.
  • Be available to take up the post as soon as possible after the start of August 2025.
  • Have a proven track record of excellence in synthetic chemistry.
  • Have excellent organisational, communication, and team working skills.
