Essential Job Duties:
The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research, extension, and teaching. The department's mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil, and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings, and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels, and fiber in North Carolina, the nation, and the world.
The postdoctoral research associate will support the analysis of next-generation sequencing data in small grains, primarily wheat. Research includes developing bioinformatics pipelines, characterizing genetic diversity and population structure, and genome-wide and association and fine-mapping for cereal improvement. The scientist analyzes DNA and RNA sequencing data, integrating genomic and genotyping resources for molecular breeding. The associate scientist will lead the preparation of scientific manuscripts reporting research methodology, results, and interpretations.
Departmental Required Skills:
- PhD in plant breeding or genetics with experience handling large datasets, including DNA sequence data.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
- Experience working with wheat.
- Strong data management and analysis skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Demonstrated experience preparing high-quality scientific manuscripts.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications:
- A valid NC Driver's License and the ability to obtain an NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
- A valid Driver's License must be maintained throughout employment.
