Job Summary

We seek a dynamic scientist/practitioner to coordinate on-farm trials focused on the evaluation and demonstration of site-specific management strategies intended to increase input use efficiency (nutrients, water, seed) and profitability. The individual in this role will run trials at farmers' fields and Research stations part of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Stations. Part of the coordination and implementation of the trials will include coordination of data collection, running data analyses, preparation of reports and presentations during in-state, regional, national and international meetings.

This is a one year limited term position and is funded from external sources. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include the following:

  • Collect and analyze spatial data, as well as prepare digital prescription maps to be uploaded and used in farm machinery (planter, sprayer, spreader, irrigation system, grain combine).
  • Establish soil fertility experiments, summarize the results of those experiments, and prepare peer-reviewed journal articles with the main findings of those studies. Experience running Fertigation and Nutrient leaching experiments is required.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in journal articles and also prepare reports and Extension publications for farmers and funding agencies.
  • Use precision agriculture technologies for data collection, variable rate application of inputs, and spatial data analysis.
  • Use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and GPS for the collection and analysis of spatial data.
  • Apply statistics knowledge to analyze spatial data collected from on-farm trials.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Disseminate research findings through presentations at national and international conferences.

Minimum Qualifications

Research Fellow III:
Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science, Environmental Science, or a closely related field and four (4) years of laboratory experience with research practices and protocols.

Research Fellow IV:
Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science, Environmental Science, or a closely related field and six (6) years of laboratory experience with research practices and protocols.

Minimum Skills and Abilities

The successful candidate is expected to be highly organized, personable, and enthusiastic; must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within multidisciplinary teams.

Minimum Technology Skills

  • Must be familiar with GIS (QGIS), precision agriculture software SMS, and GPS, use of precision agriculture technologies for the variable application of inputs, experience running Fertigation and nutrient leaching experiments.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and R.

Salary Range: $57,740 - $115,250
