Essential Job Duties:
The Genetics and Genomics Academy (GGA) at NC State University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar focused on educational innovation in interdisciplinary Genetics and Genomics (G&G) education. This position provides a unique opportunity for early-career scholars to gain experience in Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER), course development, and learner-centered pedagogy. Funding to support this position is available for up to 2 years.
About NC State's Genetics and Genomics Academy:
The Genetics and Genomics Academy (GGA) is housed within the Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs (OUIP). The field of Genetics and Genomics is a signature capability of NC State and the GGA is a university-wide effort aimed at strengthening existing and building new interdisciplinary programs related to Genetics and Genomics across all colleges. With this mission, the GGA transcends college, department, and program boundaries to promote all three pillars of the university's land-grant mission: education, research, and service to the state of North Carolina.
GGA commitments to the University and State include:
- Advancing graduate education across life-science disciplines
- Developing and promoting interdisciplinary research programs
- Expanding Genetics and Genomics knowledge for all undergraduate students

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will play a key role in GGA's commitment to graduate and undergraduate education. In collaboration with faculty mentors, they will carry out educational research programs that focus on defining and evaluating curricular and pedagogical strategies to broaden the reach of G&G education, ensuring that undergraduate students across disciplines acquire the conceptual understanding required for informed citizenship. The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will directly contribute to undergraduate education by teaching 1-credit interdisciplinary G&G courses aimed at non-science majors.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Discipline-Based Educational Research and Mentorship: With faculty mentors, develop and carry out quantitative and qualitative research studies evaluating the impact of current and future GGA programs, including existing and planned undergraduate and graduate courses, interdisciplinary tiered mentoring programs, and faculty professional development programs. In addition to studying the impacts of these courses and programs on G&G knowledge, the Postdoctoral Research Scholar will study outcomes related to genetic essentialism, community development, mentoring skills, and confidence. The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will mentor undergraduate research students participating in these projects.
- Course Development & Teaching: The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will teach one undergraduate course enrolling students across multiple disciplines each semester. They will have the opportunity to take on existing courses as well as develop new courses aimed at introducing non-science majors to key G&G concepts in a societal context. In addition, they will have the opportunity to develop case studies that integrate G&G topics and technologies with societal impacts for implementation in graduate courses.
- Professional Development: Participate in teaching workshops, mentoring programs, and research collaborations that support career growth. The postdoctoral scholar will also engage with fellow OUIP postdocs and contribute to the development of a collaborative community of practice that fosters peer mentoring, shared scholarship, and interdisciplinary exchange. Support will be provided for publication in peer-reviewed journals, grant writing, and travel to relevant conferences.
