Essential Job Duties:
We seek an exceptional postdoctoral associate to conduct NSF-funded independent research on the biological exudates that solubilize rare earth elements (REYs). Until recently, REYs were known to be used by biology, and this study seeks to determine how bacteria that utilize REYs take them up from the environment. These topics involve laboratory experiments to produce and characterize REY binding exudates produced by bacteria. Activities may include conducting microbiology experiments and utilizing molecular biology and bioinformatics approaches. Opportunities exist to interact closely with a group of distinguished intramural and extramural collaborators, including at the University of Georgia and National Laboratories.

Related Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • supervising and mentoring undergraduate students
  • outreach to high school students and teachers
  • data analysis
  • report, manuscript, and proposal preparation
  • presentation of research at local, regional, and national meetings

The position is under the supervision of Dr. Owen Duckworth in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. Interested applicants should be available to start as soon as possible.

The position is supported through Dec 31, 2026, with the possibility of renewal with satisfactory performance.

Departmental Required Skills:

  • General knowledge of soil and environmental science.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely present scientific data both orally and in writing.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

  • Experience in studying nutrient transport, -omics based approaches, bioinformatics, analytical chemistry, and strong technical communication skills (written and oral).
  • A strong publication record is highly desirable.

Necessary Licenses or Certifications:
A valid NC Driver's License and the ability to obtain an NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
A valid Driver's License must be maintained throughout employment.
