Postdoctoral Scholar in AI and Music
Position Overview
The School of Music at The Ohio State University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in AI and Music beginning Fall 2026. We seek a researcher and creative practitioner whose work explores artificial intelligence as it pertains to music and other sonic media, with potential areas of emphasis including music information retrieval, computational musicology and music theory, music cognition, spatial/immersive audio, generative music systems, human-computer interaction, machine improvisation, musical robotics, and/or new interfaces for musical expression.
The scholar will have a two-course annual teaching load and is charged with helping develop and deliver courses as part of the new AI, Arts, and Creativity undergraduate certificate. They will work closely with faculty, students, and staff in the School of Music to expand AI research, creative practice, and pedagogy, as well as pursue interdisciplinary collaborations across the university with units both within and outside the arts and humanities.
This position is one of three new post-doctoral appointments in the Arts and Humanities, each specifically tied to one of three new AI certificates: AI, Art and Creativity (in development); AI, Ethics and Society; and AI, Language and Mind. These roles work in tandem with the newly established Arts and Humanities AI Institute to support the OSU Provosts AI Fluency Initiative, preparing students and faculty to make informed decisions about the technological changes around AI.
Additional Job Information
This two-year appointment includes an annual salary of $61,008, along with research support of $7,500 to be used during the period of the appointment.
Performance Objectives
- Deliver high-quality instruction in courses related to artificial intelligence and computational music studies
- Develop a new 3-credit course during the first year to be delivered in the second year
- Maintain an active and impactful creative and research agenda
- Mentor and advise both undergraduate and graduate students undertaking AI-related research projects
- Contribute to the intellectual and pedagogical life of the School of Music and OSUs AI Fluency initiative at large
Required Qualifications
- PhD or DMA in computer music, music technology, composition, music theory, music cognition, sound studies, or a related field (ABD accepted with degree in hand by start of appointment)
- Strong expertise in AI & ML techniques for the generation and analysis of music and other sonic media
- Record of scholarly, creative, and/or professional achievements involving music and AI
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment
Desired Qualifications
- Demonstrated evidence of successful teaching in higher education
- Demonstrated artistic collaboration across multiple disciplines, including but not limited to film, theater, dance, visual arts, design or emerging media
- Demonstrated collaboration with disciplines outside the arts, including but not limited to medicine, engineering, education, law, business, or agriculture
