Postdoctoral Scholar

A postdoctoral position is available at the University of California, Irvine in the laboratory of Dr. Mehboob Hussain. The successful candidate will explore regulation of metabolism in multiple tissues using in vivo mouse models as well as human (stem) cell systems and tissues to examine metabolism regulation and disease pathogenesis and apply bioinformatic tools to identify and experimentally test novel inter-tissue signaling pathways that regulate metabolic homeostasis and/or cause disease.

Our lab employs cutting-edge approaches and state-of-the-art technologies. UC Irvine is a world-class research university with highly ranked graduate programs in biomedical sciences. Our Southern California location is home to one of the largest academic research and biotechnology hubs in the US. Lab members enjoy direct access to this outstanding community of clinicians and scientists, as well as the wide range of recreational activities available in our region. Successful candidates will join an interdisciplinary and highly collaborative team working to develop the next generation of tools and technologies to advance precision diagnostics and therapeutics.

Essential Skills
- Applicant can have their PhD at the time of the application or could be working towards the PhD or MD/PhD degree with a focus on Metabolism, Mouse Models systems, Human stem cell systems, Biochemical and Molecular Tools, Epigenetics, Genetics, Genomics, Biology, Bioinformatics, Machine Learning, or a related field.
- Extensive experience in a research environment and at least 1 first-author publication in a reputable scientific journal. The candidate is expected to have a record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press research in the field.
- The candidate should have past expertise in working with a colony of genetically modified mouse models (incl. genotyping) and be proficient in working with cell culture systems, and general laboratory biochemical and molecular biological techniques (including but not limited to: ELISA, Immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy, immunoblotting, RNA extractions, RT-qPCR). The candidate is expected to be familiar with standard software (MS Office Suite, Adobe Suite, Statistical and Graph Software packages i.e. Graphpad Prism).
- Ability to work independently to drive projects forward.
- Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to compose and deliver comprehensive presentations at scientific meetings and prepare research articles for peer-reviewed publications.

Additional Qualifications
- Experience in In vivo metabolic characterization of mouse models.
- Experience in isolation and culture of metabolic relevant tissues (ie isolated islets, isolated liver cells, adipose tissue), small rodent surgeries (e.g. miniosmotic pump implantation into mice).
- Experience in stem cell differentiation protocols in to metabolic relevant cell-types.
- Experience in next generation molecular biological tools e.g. next generation sequencing, Chip-Seq, Cut&Tag, preparation of libraries for sequencing and downstream bioinformatic analysis of data sets.

Ideal Skills
- Experience in In vivo metabolic characterization of mouse models.
- Experience in isolation and culture of metabolic relevant tissues (ie isolated islets, isolated liver cells, adipose tissue), small rodent surgeries (e.g. miniosmotic pump implantation into mice).
- Experience in next generation molecular biological tools e.g. next generation sequencing, Chip-Seq, Cut&Tag, preparation of libraries for sequencing and downstream bioinformatic analysis of data sets.
- Experience with sectioning, fixing, and staining tissues for histology imaging, laser capture microdissection, and sample prep for (single-cell) sequencing.
- Expertise with ATAC-Seq, methylation profiling, genome/exome/targeted sequencing, mutation calling, single-cell analysis, RNA-Seq, proteomics, spatial technologies from 10X, NanoString or similar, cryoET or cryoEM analysis.
- Experience in biocomputational methods and be willing to engage in methods to analyze data and further develop additional expertise in this area.
- Experience in at least 1 programming language and machine learning models. Ideally, candidates will also have some familiarity with basic biology, next-generation sequencing data, and statistical modelling of high-dimensional datasets. Experience in basic computational methods (e.g. R, Python, and/or other programming languages).
- Experience in developing computational analysis pipelines.
- Experience with building highly distributable software (e.g., R packages, Python modules, Linux-based command-line tools, C programs, MATLAB applications, GitHub).

The candidate will further support all laboratory activities including managing laboratory operations, participating in new protocol development, mouse protocol applications, supervision of students, assistance in mentoring trainees, preparation of grant applications as well as publications, participating in laboratory meetings and in collaborations with other laboratories. Ideally the candidate will pursue an independent project within the scope of the laboratory's interest while overall supporting all laboratory operations.
