Department Summary:
The Department of Cinema Studies at the University of Oregon is a community of scholars, practitioners, and staff dedicated to providing students with a well-rounded study of cinema-a term that we use to encompass film, television, and/or emerging forms of media. Cinema Studies at UO is a growing department in the Humanities that is committed to interdisciplinarity and diversity that spans both global communities and marginalized U.S. social identities. The major blends cinema history, theory, aesthetics, and digital production with courses that span the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Design, and the School of Journalism and Communication. The department supports a computer lab and an equipment room in the Knight Library.

Position Summary:
The Cinema Studies Department is seeking qualified applicants for its open instructor pool. Positions, when available, are limited duration appointments (from one term of 10 weeks, up to several terms) and are potentially renewable for up to a total of three years. In limited circumstances, there may be the possibility of renewal beyond three years based on departmental need, funding, and performance.

Minimum Requirements:

  • An MFA in a field related to Cinema Studies (e.g. Film/Media Studies, English, Journalism, Mass Communication).
  • In exceptional circumstances, when staffing production courses, a Bachelor's degree with 2 years of professional production experience and/or strong pedagogical training in a related field may substitute for an advanced degree.

Professional Competencies:

  • Demonstrated attention to the barriers that can prevent full participation of underrepresented groups in higher education and/or in media industries.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in a field related to Cinema Studies (e.g. Film/Media Studies, English, Journalism, Mass Communication).
  • College-level teaching experience appropriate to the needs of the department.

All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check.

The University of Oregon is proud to offer a robust benefits package to eligible employees, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off. For more information about benefits, visit https://hr.uoregon.edu/about-benefits.
