"ProdiG Plus Fellow Lecturer - South Asian And South Asian American Studies, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Asian and Asian American Studies"

The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies (AAAS) at Stony Brook University, New York, invites applications for a lecturer position in South Asian and South Asian American Studies, offered through the SUNY PRODiG+ Lecturer Fellowship, with the potential to be converted to a tenure-track assistant professor position in the department upon completion of a successful two-year fellowship.

The PRODiG Plus is designed with two primary goals: (1) increasing the number and share of excellent diverse faculty committed to advancing the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and (2) strengthening the pipeline for retention and support of those faculty. We seek scholars with expertise in interdisciplinary research that involves South Asian Studies and South Asian American Studies, with a focus on one or more of the following: the South Asian diaspora, media, cultural and literary studies, political and civic engagement, or issues of race, ethnicity, and identity. The successful candidate will teach courses that may include, but are not limited to: the history and migrant experiences of South Asian Americans; South Asian immigrant families and social networks; and South Asian American culture, art, and literature. The Fellow may be included in departmental activities as an early career faculty member wherever possible, and will be mentored by senior faculty in the Department of AAAS.

This 12-month, two-year long fellowship appointment will start on September 1, 2026, with the salary of $80,000 - set by SUNY. Each Fellow will be evaluated on their performance in the second year, and, if successful, their position will be converted to a tenure-track assistant professor position in the department of AAAS after two years.

About the Department:
Established in 2002, the Department of Asian & Asian American Studies is one of the few departments in the U.S. that integrates the study and teaching of both Asian and Asian American studies. It offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that highlights the history of New York as the home of Asian immigrants since the 19th century and recognizes the importance of the Asia-Pacific in this present century. Using textual studies and discourse analysis as our primary analytic tools, we focus on the study of Asian and Asian American languages, cultures, and intellectual histories over time and in contact with other global cultures. Among our faculty are internationally-recognized scholars in linguistics, cultural studies, history, philosophy, and religious studies. Our global curriculum ranges from studies of classical Asian civilizations to studies of modern Asian diasporic cultures.

B.A. in Asian & Asian American Studies
B.A. in Asian & Asian American Studies with Teacher Certification (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean).

We also offer the following minors: Asian & Asian American Studies, Asian American Studies, aSIAN Thought, China Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies, and South Asian Studies. In addition, we offer study-abroad programs that provide unique opportunities for immersion in the languages and cultures of China, India, Japan and Korea.

Required Qualifications:

1. Be eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship.
2. Hold a PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Asian Studies, South Asian Studies, or Asian American Studies, or relevant terminal degree from an accredited institution, completed prior to start date; and
3. Demonstrate personal, academic, and/or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Such experience may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer/unpaid/community service; or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Teaching experience at the undergraduate level
2. Competence in a South Asian language
3. Preference will be given to candidates who are: Current SUNY students, alumni, and/or Fellows. From a low-income background (e.g., Pell-eligible as undergraduates), were first-generation college students (students whose parents have not earned a bachelor's degree), have overcome adversity, are AmeriCorps alumni, or are veterans.
