Professor of the Practice in Sustainable Energy

Brown University’s School of Engineering (SoE) invites applications from candidates for a Professor of the Practice position at the Associate or Full level in the area of Sustainable Energy. The position anchors the educational and outreach programs of Brown’s interdisciplinary Initiative for Sustainable Energy (ISE), and the duties include: academic directorship of the recently launched Sustainable Energy masters’ program; development of new courses; teaching of up to three courses per year; and assisting in industrial outreach, community building, and translation for ISE, as appropriate. The course topics may include: the science and technology of sustainable energy; electrification and decarbonization; and economics, energy modeling, and policy of energy transitions. The masters’ program academic directorship responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: recruiting, reviewing applications, and admissions; advising and mentoring; career counseling and placement; and coordinating course offerings and curriculum planning.

The successful candidate will have extensive work experience in industry, government, and/or academia, with a record of accomplishments relevant to sustainable energy in areas such as: translational research, technology development, applications, commercialization, and societal impact. Expertise relevant to the course topics listed above is highly desired.

The appointment will be for a term of three years, and it is renewable. This is a non-tenure-track, non-tenured faculty position. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with other Brown University faculty members within and outside of the SoE. We seek a faculty member who will contribute to the mission of the SoE and the ISE, and has demonstrated a commitment to cultivating a diverse and inclusive community in science and engineering. ISE’s mission of activating research and educating future leaders in sustainable zero-carbon energy solutions requires both technical depth and a broad understanding of the policy and societal context of energy technologies and systems.

About the Environment

Brown University’s SoE provides a unique environment, emphasizing the power of interdisciplinary thought with a focus on expanding connections across engineering disciplines and beyond traditional departmental and school boundaries. The successful candidate shall become affiliated with one or more of the following groups within the SoE: Chemical and Environmental Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Materials Science; Mechanical Engineering; and Innovation Management and Design Engineering. The ISE comprises more than 25 faculty members across Brown University including the SoE and the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, and Earth Environmental and Planetary Sciences. ISE’s major activities are: research and innovation; education and training; and outreach and translation. The research thrusts of the ISE are: renewable energy; energy efficiency; and sustainable fuels and materials.

Brown University’s SoE seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce to maintain the excellence of the University and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, viewpoints, and ways of knowing and learning.

Applicants must have earned an advanced degree in engineering or a related discipline when joining the faculty. Candidates must have at least 7 years of work experience relevant to sustainable energy for an appointment at the Associate level, and at least 10 years for Full. The expected start date is July 1, 2026.

All candidates should submit: (1) a curriculum vitae; (2) a professional practice and/or research statement; (3) a teaching statement; (4) up to five published works (reports, patents, papers, etc.); and (5) a cover letter describing their interest in the position and how they can contribute to the SoE and the ISE. Candidates should also address how they would contribute to the teaching, research, and outreach missions of our diverse and inclusive university community. Candidates should provide the names of three references; these individuals will not be contacted unless the candidate is chosen to move forward in the selection process. Letters of reference should speak to the candidate’s potential as a practitioner, scholar, teacher, mentor, and colleague. Inquiries about the position should be directed to: energy_facultysearch@brown.edu.

Full consideration will be given to applications received by February 15, 2026. Brown is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer, and members of underrepresented groups in science and engineering are strongly encouraged to apply.
