Professor (W3) of Instrumental Composition

The Folkwang University of the Arts is seeking to fill the following vacancy in Faculty 1 at the earliest possible date: Professor (W3) of Instrumental Composition.
We are seeking an outstanding artistic personality with an international reputation and exceptional pedagogical ability.
The Folkwang University of the Arts understands the discipline of Composition as Integrative Composition, with focus areas in Instrumental Composition, Electronic Composition, Composition and Visualisation, and Pop Composition. A strong commitment to collaborative work with colleagues in the field of Integrative Composition is therefore expected. In addition to excellence in the practice of Instrumental Composition, experience in at least one of the other focal areas is highly desirable.
The appointee will be responsible for teaching the principal artistic subject Instrumental Composition, as well as Music Analysis and Instrumentation/Orchestration in the Bachelor’s and Master’s courses in Integrative Composition.
Given the university’s strong emphasis on Contemporary Music within the instrumental performance degrees, close cooperation with the instrumental classes is an essential component of the role. As a member of the subject group Contemporary Music, the post-holder will also deliver lectures and seminars on the Foundations of Contemporary Music and the Analysis of Contemporary Music for instrumental students. A comprehensive knowledge of all styles of Contemporary Music since 1950 is required, including notation and performance practice.
Participation in the academic self-governance of the university, the further development of its study programmes, and contributions to higher education didactics are obligatory.
Applicants must meet the following requirements: A completed university degree; Serious pedagogical interest and proof of pedagogical expertise, which is preferably evidenced by two years of university level teaching; Independent artistic practice of five years, of which at least three years should have taken place outside of a university context; The language of instruction is German. If German is not yet proficient enough, a willingness to learn German is required.
In addition, the Folkwang University of the Arts expects sensitivity in dealing with gender and diversity.
