Description
The Division of Information Technology is seeking a highly organized and motivated Project Manager to lead the execution of the CI Growth Readiness Study at Hampton University- a critical, one-year grant-funded initiative. This study is designed to assess the current and potential use of advanced Cyberinfrastructure (CI) tools, including high-performance computing clusters, data repositories, AI-specific software (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), and federated networking capabilities. The goal is to determine the necessary resource investment (high-performance computing, data storage, and networking) to support increased digitally- based research and align with the institution's AI research needs and regional innovation priorities.
This position requires strong technical expertise in server management, backups, and security, along with the ability to manage IT projects and communicate effectively with leadership and campus stakeholders. This is a part-time position.
Examples of Duties
- Project Leadership & Management:
- Oversee and manage all three phases of the one-year study to ensure operational and performance objectives are met on schedule.
- Work directly with the Principal Investigator (PI) to finalize the internal leadership team, project calendar, communication plan, and resource sharing system.
- Manage and track all project resources, including budget and personnel time.
- Team Coordination & Mentorship:
- Coordinate the activities of the 5-member core team, which includes the PI, Co-PI, CI-aware faculty, campus IT personnel, and campus administrators.
- Directly coordinate and supervise the work of graduate assistants and undergraduate students assigned to the project.
- Execution Oversight (Per Scope of Work):
- Ensure the successful execution of Phase 2a (Exploratory Design) data collection, including logistics for structured Zoom focus groups or face-to-face qualitative interviews.
- Oversee the roll-out and management of the Phase 2b empirical survey.
- Ensure timely completion of Phase 3 (Data Analysis and Study Report Development).
- Reporting & Compliance:
- Coordinate the preparation and submission of all quarterly reports to the funding agency, ensuring accuracy and adherence to grant requirements.
- Facilitate stakeholder dissemination activities, including meetings with external partners.
- Assist the PI and Co-PI with identifying and engaging necessary partners or experts for post-Phase 3 implementation and feasibility planning related to the AI Innovation Center design.
Typical Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Project Management, Business Administration, Computer Science, or a STEM discipline).
- Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience managing complex projects, preferably in an academic, research, or technology-focused environment.
- Proven experience with grant-funded projects, including familiarity with reporting requirements and compliance.
Supplemental Information
- Skills:
- Exceptional organizational skills and proficiency with project management software/tools.
- Demonstrated ability to manage diverse stakeholders (faculty, IT staff, students, administrators).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and team coordination.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Other Necessary Requirements
Preferred Technical Experience:
- Subject Matter Knowledge: Familiarity with concepts related to Cyberinfrastructure (CI), High-Performance Computing (HPC), AI/ML platforms (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), or data management is a significant asset.
- Team Leadership: Experience successfully supervising or coordinating the work of students (graduate and undergraduate) or junior staff.
- Methodology: Understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods (surveys, interviews, data analysis) as utilized in the study's scope.
- Certification: Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent is highly desirable.
