Job Description Summary
This position includes a Retention Bonus: $12,000 – payable as $1,000 per month. The Veterinary Medical Technology Instructor provides instruction, clinical oversight, and academic advising within the Veterinary Medical Technology program. This position supports the mission and goals of the College through active participation in departmental, divisional, and institutional initiatives. The instructor must possess knowledge and skills at the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) level to effectively teach and supervise students in classroom, laboratory, clinical, and internship environments. This role demonstrates a strong commitment to student success, professional ethics, teamwork, and animal welfare, and serves as a positive role model and leader within the veterinary community. This position also requires maintaining close collaboration with the Buncombe County Animal Shelter (BCAS) and its medical team to ensure high standards of animal care, communication, and student learning within the clinical setting.
Duties
- Teaches and supervises students in classroom, laboratory, and small animal clinical courses.
- Develops, manages, and updates course content and assessments within the Learning Management System (LMS).
- Prepares lesson plans, delivers engaging instruction, and evaluates student performance.
- Mentors and advises students regarding academic success, professional conduct, and career development.
- Supervises adjunct instructors and ensures instructional consistency across courses.
- Performs duties as a licensed veterinarian within the Veterinary Medical Technology Clinical Facility at BCAS, including routine and preventive care, diagnosing and treating animal illnesses and injuries, and performing surgical procedures.
- Oversees clinical scheduling and medical record management, ensuring records are accurately maintained and communicated to BCAS medical staff.
- Collaborates with the Program Manager to ensure clinical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and surgical materials are properly ordered, inventoried, and stocked.
- Ensures compliance and accurate tracking of essential skills as required by the Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA).
- Serves as the USDA Compliance Member and Attending Veterinarian of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
- Holds and maintains a valid DEA license; oversee all controlled substance inventory, usage logs, and required reporting for clinical courses.
- Leads a team of veterinary professionals and instructional staff, fostering collaboration and professionalism.
- Works with other program faculty to ensure curriculum continuity, accreditation compliance, and instructional excellence.
- Provides after-classroom clinical kennel care and patient monitoring to ensure animals receiving treatment or surgery are properly cared for and discharged to BCAS Animal Health Services.
- Represents the program at college open houses, recruitment, and community outreach events.
- Promotes positive relationships between the College, BCAS, and the broader veterinary community.
- Participates in curriculum development, program review, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Upholds college policies, safety standards, and ethical guidelines in all instructional and clinical activities.
- Supports equity and inclusive practices in all aspects of instruction, clinical care, and program operations.
- Supports the College’s Mission, Vision, Values, and RISE Statement.
- Maintains compliance with SACSCOC, NCCCS, and all applicable institutional and programmatic accreditation standards.
- Enforces College policies and procedures in instructional and clinical settings.
- Assists with onboarding and orientation for new departmental faculty and staff.
- Works with program faculty and the Coordinator, Curriculum Compliance to ensure the Veterinary Medical Technology curriculum remains relevant, rigorous, equitable, and aligned with state and institutional standards.
- Participates in assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs) at the program level and uses data for continuous improvement.
- Participates in determining and applying admission, progression, and retention criteria for Veterinary Medical Technology students.
- Instructs an appropriate course load, serves on campus committees, and advises an appropriate number of students, as determined by the Dean and Vice President for Instructional Services.
- Participates in graduation ceremony.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine;
- Teaching experience;
- Work experience in small animal medicine and surgery;
- Current North Carolina veterinary license (or eligibility for licensure);
- DEA license (or eligibility to obtain and maintain);
- USDA accreditation (or eligibility for accreditation).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching at a community college.
- Experience teaching in higher education.
- Experience with IACUC procedures, CVTEA standards, animal care regulations, and controlled substance compliance.
- Proficiency in a foreign language such as Spanish, an East Slavic language, and/or American Sign Language.
Salary
$86,484 - $89,484 (Non-Negotiable)
