The Opportunity

The Bioanalytical Mass Spectroscopy Facility (BMSF) is a facility within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre. BMSF provides extensive expertise in mass spectrometry, including proteomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, qualitative and quantitative small molecule GC/MS, LC/MS and Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry. The facility supports and collaborates with a variety of research groups within UNSW, as well as groups at other universities, other research institutes in Australia and overseas, along with commercial customers. BMSF has three major laboratories across the Kensington Campus.

The Laboratory Coordinator manages operations and actively contributes to the development and implementation of practices and procedures to support the research activities across all three BMSF laboratories. This position supports operations, including general laboratory housekeeping, health & safety, user inductions, training, supervision and stakeholder engagement.

The role reports to the Director of BMSF and has no direct reports.

Who you are

You have a degree in biological/biomedical science or related discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training or experience, and a range of management experience, and can demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Management experience in a biological or biomedical laboratory environment, along with a research experience in an aspect of mass spectrometry such as small molecule, proteomics or IRMS.
  • Expertise in the application of a range of separation or analytical techniques in biological, biomedical or analytical chemistry research, including specialist applications.
  • Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, such as Laboratory Information Management Systems and Safety Management Systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders
  • Ability to train students and/or staff in relation to relevant equipment and safety procedures
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
