About the Role

Play a hands-on role at the forefront of structural testing and digital construction research. We are seeking a Test Engineer - Structural to provide specialist engineering and technical support across Swinburne’s Smart Structures Laboratory (SSL) and Digital Construction Lab (DCL). Working closely with academic staff, researchers, students and external partners, you’ll help deliver complex structural and component testing programs that underpin teaching, research and commercial outcomes.

This is a highly practical role suited to an engineer who enjoys translating theory into real-world testing solutions. You’ll design and set up bespoke test rigs, operate advanced servo-hydraulic testing equipment, support 3D concrete research, analyse data against Australian Standards, and produce high-quality technical reports. You’ll also play a key role in ensuring laboratory safety, supervising students and interns, and contributing to the smooth day-to-day operation of state-of-the-art facilities.

About You

To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Ability to set up, monitor and demonstrate standard experiments and equipment use and prepare reports of a technical nature.
  • Experience in setting up and operation of servo hydraulic test machines.
  • Possess proficient applied structural knowledge of stress, strain and strength of materials.
  • Proficient use of Windows Microsoft Office and 3D CAD modelling software such as SOLIDWORKS.
  • Experience in developing new equipment and procedures to general specifications under general direction.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety policies, procedures and compliance.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to facilitate the provision of advice and support required by both staff and students.
  • Possess well-developed organisational, time management and problem-solving skills, be flexible and can use initiative and be responsive to priorities.

Qualifications

Completion of a degree in Civil Engineering, with relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination or extensive relevant experience and/or education/training; or completion of a relevant associate diploma and subsequent relevant work experience.
