The Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU) which is part of the Department of Archaeology is inviting applications from internal applicants for the role of Project Supervisor (Grade I). The CAU is undertaking archaeological investigations on a range of excavations, evaluations and surveys throughout East Anglia. Confirmed sites include prehistoric landscapes, Iron Age and Roman settlements and various urban sites.

Project Supervisors direct teams on small to medium scale archaeological projects or direct parts of larger projects, from fieldwork through to post excavation assessment, analysis and potentially publication. They ensure that these projects are completed to a sufficiently high standard in accordance with national and regional guidelines.

Project Supervisors will be mentored by a Senior Project Officer who will help post holders understand the role and its responsibilities. These mentors will also be able to provide guidance with ongoing projects from time to time and offer career guidance if required. Training will also be provided with post-excavation analysis and production of assessments and reports.

The CAU has 4 Project Supervisor (Grade I) posts available for internal applicants.

Requirements:

  • It is essential that applicants have a degree in Archaeology. A related subject degree will only be considered if the candidate has significant practical on-site excavation experience in a commercial archaeological organisation. This will be determined by the University.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a knowledge of British Archaeology and have a strong aptitude for archaeological fieldwork. The role holder will demonstrate a strong willingness to develop their archaeological career.
  • It is essential that the role holder can clearly demonstrate significant fieldwork experience in a professional archaeological organisation including examples of supporting or deputising for the site director.
  • Have a clean UK/ EU driving licence or commit to procuring a UK driving licence within the 6 month probation period.
  • Hold one or more of the following: a valid CIfA membership, First Aid at Work, SSSTS, Manual Handling, HSG47 Pipe & Cable detection, Asbestos Awareness, Plant/Banksman/Marshaller training.
  • It is essential that the role holder is able to work with, communicate, and liaise professionally with colleagues, external contractors, clients, Historic Environment staff, and occasionally, the public.
  • Applicants will be able to demonstrate a high degree of precision & accuracy, be able to work to strict deadlines, follow specifications laid out in archaeological briefs, follow CIfA best practice, H&S guidance & legislation, and respond to client deadlines.
  • Good IT skills including an aptitude for learning to use databases and new software.
  • Understand and adhere to the University's equality, diversity, inclusion & dignity at work policies.

The roles are full-time and the role holders will ideally be in post by 15th October 2025.

Permanent: These posts are permanent with ongoing funding. The post is subject to a 6-month probation period.
