Job Summary/Basic Function

The Psychology Instructor is responsible for teaching Psychology courses at Bay de Noc Community College primarily at the Escanaba campus. The focus of this position is teaching introductory psychology and other psychology classes, which may include developmental psychology, social psychology, abnormal psychology, and educational psychology. Opportunities to teach psychology in local high schools, online, and first-year experience courses may occur. In addition, the faculty member has various responsibilities related to professional development, curriculum development, student advising and success, as well as activities that support the College and the Social and Behavioral Sciences division operational success. This is a full-time, tenure-track position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher (or 18 graduate level credits) in psychology
  • Post-secondary teaching experience in psychology
  • Online teaching experience
  • Commitment to quality instruction in a learner-centered environment with the goal of consistently improving student success
  • Commitment to the community college mission and philosophy
  • Ability to provide inclusive and accessible teaching and learning approaches for diverse student populations
  • Demonstrated skill in effective written and oral communications
  • Demonstrated literacy in information technology and computer use
  • Willingness to learn and implement new teaching strategies as needed to enhance student success
  • Commitment to value, respect, and provide an equitable learning experience in an inclusive, welcoming environment; standing against discrimination or harassment to educate all students regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, veteran or military status, or other protected status.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph. D. in Psychology or PSY D. or Ed D
  • Course work in education
  • Experience teaching at a community college
  • Experience and interest in teaching college psychology courses at local high schools
  • Experience teaching in a learning management system
  • Online teaching certification
  • Successful experience working with high-school age students
  • Use of evidence-based teaching practices related to active and collaborative learning, critical thinking, and critical literacy and information skills.
  • Experience with learning outcomes assessment

There are opportunities to teach at alternate sites, including both Bay College campuses; mileage and travel time reimbursements are determined by the master agreement. Job Duty

  • Instruct psychology courses at the Bay College Escanaba campus. Opportunities to teach psychology at local high schools, online, and first year experience classes may occur.
  • Facilitate student learning through the following activities: Develop course syllabi that share with students the expectations, standards, policies, and learning outcomes and objectives of the course Actively engage with students, fostering retention and success Contribute to the development and delivery of assessments of course, program, and institutional learning outcomes Use evidence-based pedagogical practices focused on student learning Provide regular and substantive interaction and feedback to facilitate student belonging, engagement, and learning Recognize and respond appropriately to diverse student populations and their learning needs, including disability accommodations Develop and use supplementary learning materials, resources, and technology Hold student hours in accordance with the master agreement Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records
  • Collaborate with faculty within and across divisions and with administration to determine scheduling of course offerings. Collaborate with faculty and administration on curriculum development as needed. Advise students, including K-12 education majors, on academic and career issues in collaboration with other academic advisors. Actively support student success through counseling, advising and assisting individual and groups of students as needed by maintaining regular student hours and/or scheduled student appointments. Stay abreast of developments in the field of psychology and teaching and learning by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional development opportunities. Collaborate with other teaching faculty, staff, and administration to ensure that all students receive instruction that promotes learning and growth. Actively participate in division and college activities, including, but not limited to, professional development opportunities, student events, student organizations, etc. Represent Bay College and higher education through advocacy and service in the communities in which you participate. Establish working relationships with transfer institutions and community partners. Actively participate in service to the college, including academic or administrative committees focused on continuous improvement, institutional policies, student outreach/engagement, and/or academic matters Adhere to the ethical standards of the college, the State of Michigan, the Higher Learning Commission, FERPA, and other education regulations. Provide a safe learning environment. Communicate with students, colleagues, and other stakeholders in a timely and professional manner. Work with learning assistants, tutors, and/or student workers as needed. Participate in professional activities such as, but not limited to, curriculum planning, syllabus writing, examination development, textbook selection, program revision, online teaching certification, and outcome assessment.
