Job Summary

The Chabot – Las Positas Community College District is seeking a part-time Counselor for the EOPS & CARE programs at Chabot College in Hayward, CA. The EOPS & CARE programs support students who have historically been marginalized in higher education by providing “over and above” services to help keep students on the path to achieving their academic goals. Under the general supervision of the Dean of Special Programs, this position involves providing academic, career and personal counseling to EOPS & CARE students. This position is an hourly (16.5 hours per week) assignment in person on the Chabot College campus.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide academic advising, personal and career counseling;
  2. Support students with career exploration and educational planning;
  3. Provide students with in-person and/or virtual academic advising;
  4. Maintain regular schedule of academic counseling appointments which includes, but not limited to, registration support and comprehensive student educational planning as determined by program needs;
  5. Facilitate career exploration and personal growth workshops to enhance the EOPS and CARE student experience;
  6. Establish and maintain effective working relations with faculty, staff, administrators and students;
  7. Utilize degree audit student educational planning systems to monitor progress and success of a cohort of students;
  8. Assist with program outreach and recruitment efforts;
  9. Collaborate with other Special Programs and academic support services on campus to enhance the student experience;
  10. Teach EOPS Psychology-Counseling courses;
  11. Assume other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development, or the equivalent,

AND

EOPS Counselors hired after October 24, 1987, shall:

(1)Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominately relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages.

OR

(2)Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages

AND

In addition, an EOPS counselor hired after October 24, 1987, shall have two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages.

Evidence of understanding of and responsiveness to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, racial and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices within the classroom.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated experience with teaching college classes and development of college curriculum;
  2. Demonstrated experience with academic, career and personal counseling;
  3. Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
