Position Description

DEFINITION

To provide classroom instruction to adult ESL students by assessing their needs and using these assessments to inform direct instruction centering on work-related and employability skills that are immediately applicable to students' lives. Instructor adjusts teaching methods to students' learning styles which may include: demonstrations, visuals to support instruction, problem-solving, pair and small group activities, student speaking practice, meaningful interaction, role play, and feedback. Instruction is differentiated and contextualized.

Primary goals of the ESL department include improving English language conversation abilities, increasing student self-confidence, and developing students’ employment/employ-ability skills.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

  • Receives supervision from the Director of Academic and Career Readiness
  • Receives direction from the ESL Coordinator
  • Exercises no supervision

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS: Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

  • Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons
  • Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores
  • Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate
  • Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements
  • Stay abreast of new developments, and changes in various academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines
  • Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs.

Other Important Functions:

  • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format;
  • Oversee and participate in the field studies and assignment; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate
  • Meet documentation requirements and deadlines as set forth by the program coordinator
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations
  • Principles and procedures of instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment
  • Classroom instructional techniques and procedures
  • Principles and practices of curriculum development and instructional teaching strategies
  • Current trends, research and development in the area of adult education
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping
  • Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration

Ability to:

  • Interpret and apply College goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

  • making observations
  • reading and writing
  • communicating with others
  • operating assigned equipment
  • handling varied tasks simultaneously

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:

  • walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time
  • operating assigned equipment
  • preparing and presenting instructional material
  • bending, stooping, climbing or lifting up to 50 pounds

Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of:

  • making sound decisions
  • responding to questions
  • demonstrating intellectual capabilities
  • evaluating special learning needs of students

Experience and Training GuidelinesAny combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Minimum Required Experience:

  • Ability to determine students’ English work- and life-related needs through both formal (testing) and informal assessment. Ability to implement various teaching methods to meet the learning styles of individuals who cannot read or speak English. Ability to follow-up and follow-through so that each student may realize educational gains and success.
  • Must be able to implement various learning styles and instruct individuals who cannot read or speak English.

Minimum Required Education/Training:A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

Preferred Experience/Training:

  • TESOL or K-12 teacher certification
  • Experience teaching adult ESL Beginners
  • Experience teaching employability skills
  • Ability to apply adult learning theory and principles.
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) Certification
