Qualitative Research Associate

We are seeking an enthusiastic Qualitative Research Associate to join the CARE-HSC programme, specifically working on ‘Workstream 1: Formal (Workforce) Carers’ co-led by Professor Stephani Hatch and Dr Rebecca Rhead.

This workstream focuses on collaborating with NHS peer researchers to uncover mechanisms of racial inequities in care systems, exploring how racism affects care delivery and outcomes using qualitative and quantitative methods.

The successful candidate will qualitatively explore how sources of racism (institutional, interpersonal, and internalized) intersect and develop over time for healthcare staff and students, influencing education, teamwork, and outcomes, including discrimination, disciplinary processes, and institutional responses. They will also conduct a realist review of anti-racism policies across the NHS and higher education.

The aim is to investigate the impact of racism and racialization on teamwork, care delivery, and compliance with the NHS’s Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES).

The postholder will contribute to data collection, analysis, publications, dissemination, and support training and supervision. They will work with CARE-HSC colleagues and stakeholders.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week) on a fixed-term contract until 31st December 2031. Research staff are entitled to at least 10 days per year for professional development.

Essential criteria:

  • PhD (awarded or thesis submitted) in a relevant discipline with strong qualitative research experience and interest in health/social care.

  • Experience in preparing ethical applications and knowledge of data confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively.

Salary: £45,031 per annum, including London Weighting Allowance. This post is subject to Disclosure and Barring Service and/or Occupational Health clearances. Interviews are scheduled for the week commencing 27th October 2025.
