Qualitative Researcher, CIC

The Oxford Department of International Development (ODID) is seeking to recruit a Qualitative Researcher, CIC. Reporting to Professor Masooda Bano, the post holder will be a member of a research group working under a European Research Council Advanced Grant titled Choosing Islamic Conservatism. The project is using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to study intergenerational transmission of Islamic knowledge among Muslim communities in the West and their sense of national belonging. The post-holder will be responsible for developing a qualitative study under the supervision of the PI to map European Muslim Youth’s reaction to European states’ response to the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The role requires prior familiarity with ongoing pro-Palestinian movements and groups in the UK and Europe, and an ability to approach their members to undertake online interviews. The focus is on understanding positions adopted by different states and how these policies have affected the involved youth's sense of belonging to their nation-state. The project focuses on five countries: the UK, Germany, France, Austria, and Bosnia but this research component will cover movements across all European countries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage own academic research and administrative activities, within guidelines provided by the Principal Investigator
  • Map the pro-Palestinian movements active in ongoing protests across the UK and Europe and interview their members
  • Compare the approach of different states towards the management of these protests

This post is offered for one year, either full-time or part-time, at 50% FTE. The successful candidate will hold a Master’s or PhD degree in a Social Science. A background in political science or sociology with a focus on social movement theories, or Middle East history, can be useful. They will have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write down the findings in an academically rigorous way. Prior familiarity with pro-Palestinian networks in the UK and Europe, as well as the ability to secure access to these networks and hold online interviews with their members, is essential for this role. Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application. Only applications received before 12 midday on Monday 25th September 2025 can be considered.
