REGISTERED NURSE - CRNA Internship
During internship:
All duties and responsibilities are performed under the direct supervision of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) provider within the scope of practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) until certification and credentialing are successfully completed. Work collaboratively in a team environment. Collaborate with CRNA to prepare preoperative assessments including health histories and physical examinations. Develop the Anesthesia Care Plan with the CRNA and Anesthesiologist. Contribute to appropriate perioperative anesthesia care. Contribute to and monitor appropriate patient records including quality assurance documentation. Contribute to postoperative evaluations in accordance with department policies. Participate in ongoing projects. Support perioperative providers as appropriate. Other duties or projects as assigned. Function in accordance with all institutional policies and guidelines. This position involves radiation exposure and the requirement to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Must be able to fulfill required weekday, weekend and holiday obligations. Must be self-directed, reliable, demonstrate initiative and motivation to work independently, and exhibit excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Once credentialing and privileging have been achieved:
Provide anesthesia and anesthesia related care to facilitate diagnostic, therapeutic and/or surgical procedures to all patients regardless of age under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist, working collaboratively in a team environment. Prepare preoperative assessments including health histories and physical examinations. Develop the Anesthesia Care Plan with the anesthesiologist. Initiate and maintain appropriate perioperative anesthesia care. Maintain appropriate patient records including quality assurance documentation. Complete postoperative evaluations in accordance with department policies. Participate in ongoing projects. Support perioperative providers. Other duties or projects as assigned. Function in accordance with all institutional policies and guidelines. Maintain licensure, certification, credentialing, and current BLS and ACLS or PALS status at all times. This position requires radiation exposure and the requirement to wear the appropriate (PPE) personal protective equipment. Must be able to fulfill required weekend obligations. Must be self-directed, reliable, demonstrate initiative and motivation to work independently, and demonstrate excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Intern Required Qualifications:
- Current and accurate resume and application must be completed.
- Minimum of a Master degree with graduation from an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program in the next 4 months (from date of posting).
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
- Current ACLS and BLS certification.
- Ability to wear appropriate (PPE) personal protective equipment including but not limited to lead vests and aprons, powered air purifying respirators (PAPR) and N-95 masks.
Required Qualifications to progress to New Graduate CRNA:
This is a preparatory position for a Michigan Medicine staff CRNA. An Intern will be transitioned to a credentialed and privileged new graduate staff CRNA position if all the following criteria have been met by the Intern:
- Successful completion of the National Certification Exam (NCE) - within 45 days of graduating from an accredited CRNA program.
- Michigan Nurse Anesthetist Specialty certification documentation initiated and provided as soon as possible following successful completion of the NCE
- Successful completion of credentialing and privileging process through Michigan Medicine
- Satisfactory performance in the Intern role
RN Intern title will be changed to new graduate staff CRNA and pay adjusted based on collective bargaining agreement (CBA) following confirmation of meeting all criteria above. Once the Intern transitions to a new graduate staff CRNA, they will begin a 6-month probationary period. Upon successful completion of probation, the seniority accrued will begin with the original date of hire as an Intern. Internal hires are exempt from the probationary period. An Intern can only remain in this position for up to 6 months. Failure to secure other Michigan Medicine employment by 6 months in the position will result in termination of employment. Must maintain Michigan Registered Nurse licensure, specialty certification, credentialing, privileging, and current ACLS and BLS certifications.
Additional:
- Scheduled date for National Certification Exam secured.
- Five years of adult ICU nursing experience.
- Demonstration of appropriate interpersonal and communication skills.
- Doctoral degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program in the next 4 months.
Intern required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be fully considered and interviewed for the position. Progression to a New Graduate CRNA status is contingent upon satisfaction of all required qualifications which are defined below.
Hours: 40 hours per week
Shift Requirements:
- Day/Evening/Night rotation; with other requirements as follows:
- Weekday, Weekends, and holidays.
- Variable shift start times and shift lengths.
- Weekday call obligations.
- Weekend and holiday call obligations.
