Position Description
This position is in a laboratory of Dr. Michael Lee who is interested in defining the pathologic mechanisms for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Parkinson’s Disease (PD) using cellular and transgenic mouse models. The candidate will assist the Principal Investigator by performing duties related to characterizing neuropathology in animal models.
(45% effort) Perform histological analysis of mouse brain. Perform euthanasia and fixation of mouse brain. Prepare fixed brain for frozen or paraffin sections. Perform paraffin embedding of tissues and generate paraffin sections. Generate frozen sections on sliding microtome for stereological analysis. Perform histochemical and immunohistochemical analysis. Generate sections for RNA based analysis (RNAscope, GoeMx, CosMx) and perform simple RNAscope procedures.
(30% effort) Perform imaging and quantitative analysis of stained sections. Perform whole slide scanning using Motic Slide Scanner of stained slides for analysis. Learn and perform quantitative analysis of stained slides using Image J and/or HALO image analysis system. Learn and perform quantitative analysis using Microbrightfield Stereology system. Image immunofluorescence sections via widefield immunofluorescence or confocal microscopy.
(20% effort) Maintain histology infrastructure. Regular maintenance of paraffin processing/embedding equipment. Ensure that required service contracts and software licenses needed for histological studies are up to date. Work with vendors to troubleshoot any problems with the software and/or equipment. Arrange for any service if needed. Train new staff on the proper histological/immunohistochemical techniques and the proper use of equipment.
(5% effort) Prepare weekly progress to present at weekly lab meetings.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience or related field (e.g. Biology, Psychology) plus at least two years of relevant experience, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least six years. Previous experience working with mice. Must be willing to work with mouse models of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's Disease.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification in scientific or medical histology. Prior experience in histological analysis, particularly rodent brains. Familiarity with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.
