About the Role

The Department of Education are seeking a Research Assistant to provide research support for a project focused on the development of a large external research grant application titled Gen(d)erations: Past stories, present perspectives and future approaches for trans and non-binary inclusion and belonging in medicine.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, Dr Debbie Aitken, the post holder will be a member of an interdisciplinary Medical Education research team and will contribute substantively to the intellectual development, empirical grounding, and administrative coordination of the project, with a particular focus on strengthening the evidence base, supporting interdisciplinary collaboration, and assisting with the preparation of a competitive large scale funding application to a major external funder, including coordination of supporting documentation, budgeting information, and regulatory materials.

The post holder will not have line management responsibilities but will work closely with the Principal Investigator and a network of internal and international collaborators across Education, History, Medicine, Social Policy, and healthcare practice.

The post holder will hold a first degree, together with relevant research experience in social sciences, humanities, medicine, or a closely related discipline. They will either have completed a Master’s in Medical or Clinical Education, or be working toward or holding a doctorate in a relevant specialist discipline. They will also possess sufficient specialist knowledge to work effectively within established research programmes, including specialist knowledge of queer theory and or LGBTQ+ related research relevant to health, education, or social science contexts. Demonstrated ability to manage own research and administrative activities effectively and independently is essential, alongside excellent communication skills, including the ability to produce high quality written material suitable for funding applications and academic outputs, present material in academic or professional settings, and represent the research group in meetings. Lastly, the post holder will have experience of following and adapting research methodologies in response to project needs and constraints.

Only applications received before midday on Friday, 13 March 2026 will be considered. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application.
