Research Associate (738063)

Faculty of Engineering

Industrially funded project by UK Research Centre in Non-Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE). To develop remote ultrasonic array imaging based on laser ultrasonic phased arrays.

Contract: 1 FTE (35 hours per week)

Term: Fixed (23 months)

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to join the University of Strathclyde as part of an industrially funded project by the UK Research Centre in Non-Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE). You will be involved in a project on the development of remote ultrasonic array imaging based on laser ultrasonic phased arrays with Dr Theodosia Stratoudaki. This project has two core aims: a) investigate signal processing approaches tailored for laser ultrasonic array imaging in 2D and 3D, including development of array imaging algorithms and data analysis and b) develop instrumentation (hardware and software) for fast, laser ultrasonic data acquisition.

This is a fixed term position for up to 23 months.

The successful candidate will have experience in project development and leadership within a research context, along with excellent communication, presentation, and organisational skills. They will thrive in a dynamic environment and be capable of working independently as well as collaboratively, as part of a team. As part of the role, the candidate will be expected to work closely with industrial partners and other researchers within the Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. The position requires strong communication skills for delivering regular presentations, writing progress reports, completing project deliverables, conducting demonstrations in industrial settings, supervising students, and collaborating with fellow researchers. This role is ideal for researchers who are passionate about innovation and interested in developing and leading novel experimental test campaigns in both academic and industrial settings. The post-holder will engage with world-leading experts in ultrasonics and non-destructive evaluation at Strathclyde, other UK higher education institutions, and across industry, ensuring their research addresses state-of-the-art challenges in safety-critical applications of laser ultrasonics. Please see Strathclyde’s Grade 7 job description.

We value diversity in research as well as within the research team and welcome applications from a diverse range of backgrounds to collaborate in a supportive and inclusive environment. We endorse the principles of Athena SWAN, for which we hold the bronze award, and we are committed from all levels in our faculty in promoting gender equality. Your career development will be supported within this project, which presents excellent opportunities for networking with academic and industrial partners, as well as funding for participating in events and opportunities for training for research, teaching, leadership and management. You will have access to Strathclyde’s excellent and extensive researcher development program and mentoring scheme.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of EngD/PhD level in an appropriate discipline, or have significant relevant experience in addition to a relevant degree. You will have sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in design and implement laboratory experiments in array ultrasonics.

Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with: relevant work experience, membership of relevant Chartered/professional bodies (including the Higher Education Academy), experience of relevant student supervision and teaching activities, and/or experience of knowledge exchange related activities.

For informal enquiries about this post, please contact Dr Theodosia Stratoudaki, Senior Lecturer at t.stratoudaki@strath.ac.uk
