Are you interested to investigate how biomechanics affects bone ingrowth in additively manufactured porous implants?

By 2060, the demand of joint replacements is projected to increase by almost 40% from 2018 levels. Porous implants built with AMT offer customization for improved mechanical performance and biological outcomes. In turn, bone ingrowth is dependent, among other factors, on the change in mechanical behaviour as bone grows into the porous structure.

We are recruiting a self-motivated and passionate Postdoctoral Research Associate Research Associate as part of a UKRI Future Leader’s Fellowship project ‘Multiscale design and analysis of bio-functional porous orthopaedic implant’. The aim of this position is to characterise the mechanical properties of the bone-implant at different stages of bone ingrowth to inform implant design.

We are looking for a well-organised and creative engineer to join us on this adventure. The ideal candidate will have a PhD (or be about to submit your thesis) in mechanical engineering or experimental biomechanics, and solid experience of mechanical testing, micro-Computed Tomography imaging, Digital Volume Correlation, and Nanoindentation. Demonstrating a history of published work in reputable peer-reviewed journals is required. You will be based in Sheffield, participate in patient and public involvement and engagement events, and work with academic and industrial collaborators in this project. You will also be supported by a professional development package including allocated funding for additional training, industrial placement and travel expenses to present project outputs at national and international conferences.
