"Research Associate in Metagenomics"

About the opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate in Metagenomics to join the University of Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute (SydneyID) and contribute to cutting-edge research in diagnostics and epidemiology of infectious diseases. The role is part of MRFF Genomics Health Futures project aimed to apply microbial metagenomics to reduce infection risks among culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Sydney.

You will work closely with Professors Vitali Sintchenko, Rebecca Rockett, Ben Marais and Tanya Golubchik of the Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute and clinicians at the Western Sydney Local Health District.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• undertake collaborative research in metagenomics focusing on the detection and analysis of bacterial pathogens in respiratory samples
• develop novel approaches to analyse metagenomic data in the context of bacterial colonisation and infection
• produce high-quality research outputs, including peer-reviewed publications and presentations to academic and government stakeholders
• develop a coherent research program in translational metagenomics and an emerging research profile
• support and supervise junior researchers and clinical trainees
• contribute to the positive culture and reputation of the Faculty of Medicine and Health (FMH) and the University of Sydney through research, mentorship, and stakeholder engagement.

About you

• PhD or BHons in Biomedical Science, Computer Science, Health Informatics, or a related field
• a developing research profile, with publications in genetics and/or informatics
• proven experience in original research, and scholarly activity
• experience in next-generation sequencing data analysis and cross-disciplinary research
• high-level skills in communication, leadership, and collaboration
• a developing network of academic, industry, and professional partners.
