This post is full time, and has funding for up to 18 months.

We are advertising an 18-month Research Associate role in protein design, expression and testing at the University of Glasgow, with scope for extension as projects allow.

You will join the UKRI funded MERLIN project (Molecular Engineering for Rapid Low-Cost Metabonomic Profiling and Metabolite Detection), where we aim to engineer new materials and develop new methods for rapid metabolite profiling in blood, environmental samples, and other complex mixtures. The project is running in the Bio-Nano Sensing group, led by Dr William Peveler, and cuts across molecular synthesis, protein engineering and analytical method development, and we are collaborating with clinicians, environmental engineers and many others to deliver our technologies to end users.

Specifically for this role we are looking for an experienced protein engineer to join the team and set up new avenues of research based on recombinant protein engineering and expression. If you have a PhD in Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline, and enjoy a problem-solving and collaborative approach to Science this would be a great opportunity for you.

You will set up a new expression facility within the group, as well as design and produce new proteins, and then have opportunities to carry out high throughput screening and incorporate hit materials into sensing technologies. There will be opportunities to develop new skills in measurement and sensing, and you will also have opportunities to work with collaborators in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Hannover on modelling, computational design and docking, and contribute to other projects in the laboratory dependant on your skills and interests.

The Bio Nano Sensing group is vibrant and dynamic group, typically consisting of 3-4 PhD students, 2-3 Post-Doctoral Researchers and a Research Technician, as well as project students and visiting researchers. We aim to provide an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative environment for researchers at all career stages and our alumni have gone on to success in industrial R&D, publishing, and academia. More information on the group, our labs and our projects can be found at pevelerlab.com, and informal enquiries about the role or group are welcomed by Dr Peveler (william.peveler@glasgow.ac.uk).

The University of Glasgow has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK. If you require a Skilled Worker visa to work in the UK, you will be required to meet the eligibility requirements of the visa route to be assigned a Certificate of Sponsorship.
