This post is full-time (35 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 48 months until 31st May 2030.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate to work with Professor Ruth Dukes on the project: The Rule of Law at Work: Employment Law Compliance and Enforcement (‘LawAtWork’).

LawAtWork investigates employment law compliance and enforcement across several jurisdictions including the UK, Italy and Germany. It thereby seeks to test the hypothesis that widespread breach of employment rights may erode public faith in the rule of law. Using a combination of methods drawn from economic anthropology, sociology, law and comparative political economy, LawAtWork analyses actors’ decision-making, motivations and understandings and, at the same time, the structural constraints and resources that shape perceptions and actions. In doing so, it pays particular attention to broad changes in political economy over time, to legal, institutional and organisational change, and to technological developments.

The School of Law is ranked 44th amongst law schools globally in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025. It is a centre for innovative world leading research and excellence in education. We are proud to be an international law school with a rich heritage. Law was one of the four original faculties established by the University upon its founding in 1451. The subject has been taught continuously since 1714. Today, we teach students from over 30 countries with a staff from across the world.

The successful candidate will make a leading contribution to the project and also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.

Candidates should hold an Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) in sociology, law or an associated field or alternatively possess professional qualifications and experience equivalent to PhD level plus the requisite experience, plus a track record of emerging independence within a research environment. They should also have comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the study of employment law and/or employment relations and the sociology of work.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor Ruth Dukes, Ruth.Dukes@glasgow.ac.uk
