Research Coordinator

Stanford's Graduate School of Business (GSB) has built a global reputation based on its immersive and innovative management programs. We provide students a transformative leadership experience, pushing the boundaries of knowledge with faculty research, and offering a portfolio of entrepreneurial and non-degree programs that deliver global impact. We invite you to be part of our mission of developing innovative, principled, and insightful leaders who change lives, change organizations, and change the world.

The Behavioral Laboratory of the Stanford Graduate School of Business (https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/faculty-research/behavioral-lab) is an interdisciplinary human subjects research laboratory that supports the research of GSB faculty and doctoral students. It is one of a handful of research support units at the GSB that make up the broader Research Hub organization. The Behavioral Lab mainly supports the research of the micro-organizational behavior and behavioral marketing faculty and doctoral students, but also other disciplines. This entails online survey research, in-person laboratory experiments, and manipulating / coding the collected data (i.e., videos from lab studies and text data from online surveys). Throughout the year, the lab supports about 20+ faculty and their doctoral students.

The Behavioral Laboratory seeks one Research Coordinator. It is a 1-year, fixed-term position with the possibility of a renewal for a second year. The Research Coordinator will provide research assistance to faculty in human subjects research by running online surveys and conducting study sessions for in-person laboratory experiments. This is a perfect position for those looking towards graduate school in organizational behavior, marketing, social psychology, and related fields.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to support the process of human subjects research and learn more deeply how it is conducted. Working under the direction and supervision of the Lab Director and/or faculty researcher, the Research Coordinator provides direct research support to the organizational behavior and behavioral marketing faculty and Ph.D. students at the GSB Behavioral Lab. You will be in a position to learn how online research and laboratory experimentation is conducted by carrying out that research for faculty. You will spend the majority of your time prepping, troubleshooting, and posting online surveys, and carrying out in-person laboratory experiments.

This is a 100% on-site job that requires work with in-person subjects. Remote work is not available for this role.

A cover letter and CV is required for this application.

Your primary responsibilities include:

Research support, about 80% of time, may consist of running experiment sessions, programming computer-based studies, data coding and entry, and gathering field data. In addition to research support, roughly 10% of time, the Research Coordinator will provide administrative support for the Behavioral Lab. Administrative support may include communication with members of the participant pool, maintenance of lab technology, managing participant pools, coordinating lab space scheduling, and ensuring the laboratory space is maintained.

  • Plan and perform research tasks requiring initiative and judgment by applying basic knowledge and understanding of scientific theory when precedents do not provide specific guidance. General instruction provided by the supervisor as needed. May interpret study results in collaboration with supervisor or PI.
  • Participate in the development and administration of survey instruments and rating scales requiring judgment in applying non-routine procedures. Audit the accuracy and validity of data.
  • Review and audit research forms for completion and accuracy with source documents and ensure compliance with research protocols.
  • Identify, select, extract and summarize data and structured information. Present summary of findings to supervisor.
  • Build and organize data as requested by principal investigator or supervisor; use common spreadsheet programs requiring the application of job control language in generating and organizing data.

  • Assist with development, communication, and design of research findings to internal and external audiences, which may include web updates, social media, and/or white papers, for use in recruitment, educational, or awareness of programs, with guidance from supervisor.
  • May orient and train new staff or students.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may also be assigned.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field (social psychology, organizational behavior, marketing), or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.
  • The ability to work independently in an unstructured environment with unpredictable workflows and remain flexible to changing policies and procedures. Supervision is relatively hands-off after an initial training period of a few months but maintains consistent communication with the Lab Director.
  • An ability to balance multiple, competing projects working with multiple faculty and doctoral students.
  • Independent self-starter who can take initiative, see projects through to completion, and understand the unique priorities and demands of the quick pace of the research environment.
  • General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • An intermediate level or better skill with Excel / Google Sheets.
