The Department of Engineering in the College of Engineering, Design & Physical Sciences at Brunel University of London is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to join a multidisciplinary research team led by Professor Hamid Bahai. The post will contribute to research on multi-scale and multi-physics simulation of CO2 storage in geological formations and forms part of a broader research programme aimed at developing advanced technological solutions for the energy sector. The programme focuses on computational fluid–solid interaction, process synthesis and design, numerical modelling, and optimisation, with the potential to play a transformative role in low-carbon energy systems over the coming decades.

The successful candidate will be expected to further develop an existing computational code for CO2 storage in deep saline aquifers. The work will be primarily centred on the development of an Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) formulation for accurate and efficient modelling of pressure fields resulting from CO2 injection, using a vertically averaged multiphase flow formulation. This will be coupled with a Streamline Upwind Petrov–Galerkin / Finite Element / Finite Difference Method (SUPG–FEM–FDM) framework to model the evolution of the average saturation of each phase within the aquifer.

Applicants should hold a PhD in computational geomechanics or a closely related discipline and have a strong background in numerical simulation of solids and fluids, together with experience in multi-scale and multi-physics modelling. The post is offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis for four months, commencing on 1 March 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter by mutual agreement. The salary will be at the appropriate grade per annum, inclusive of London allowance.
