Research Fellow in Experimental X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Research Fellow in Experimental X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The Minns group at the University of Southampton, UK, are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow in the field of experimental time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TRXPS) of gas phase molecules. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with theoretical collaborators (Karl Michael Ziems, Southampton, and Sonia Coriani, DTK) to develop our understanding of satellite state in TRXPS measurements and how these can be used to track photochemical change. See https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2506.14498 for a recent example.

The position is funded until 31/10/2028 via a Leverhulme Trust grant with an anticipated start date of the 1st November 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The project will involve experiments at Free Electron Laser Facilities and subsequent analysis and modeling of the data. The successful applicant will join a vibrant research group that uses a wide variety of spectroscopic methods to study photochemical processes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and carry out research in TRXPS.
  • Data analysis (e.g., Data visualization and fitting transient data).
  • Manuscript preparation and presentation of results at national and international meetings.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD or equivalent qualifications / experience in Experimental Photochemistry or related area.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in the field of photochemistry.
  • Experience of molecular photoelectron spectroscopy.
  • Basic programming skills for data analysis modeling.
