Research Laboratory Tech Associate

The Shavit lab in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School is seeking a highly motivated and responsible individual to provide technical support for the study of the genetics of blood clotting disorders using a zebrafish model. The goal of our research is to identify genes that modify risk for coagulation disorders and find novel drugs or therapeutic strategies. The candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator and/or laboratory manager.

  • Management of zebrafish colony including daily feeding of fish, breeding fish to maintain transgenic and wild type lines, regulating water quality and cleaning tanks
  • Assist in maintenance of the laboratory including inventory, research equipment, and record keeping
  • Conduct basic and moderately complex experiments using
  • Molecular biology techniques (PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA cloning)
  • CRISPR techniques to disrupt targeted genes
  • Microinjection, manipulation, and characterization of zebrafish embryos
  • Fluorescent microscopy
  • Collect, analyze, and process research data
  • Train others in equipment operation and laboratory techniques
  • Assist in the development of laboratory procedures and protocols
  • Review results with PI and suggest options for improving procedures and research protocols
  • Assist in preparation of grant proposals and manuscripts for publication
  • Participate and present in laboratory meetings, with potential opportunities for local and national conferences

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or progress towards a bachelor's degree
  • 6 months experience in research setting relevant to the position
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to learn new skills or techniques
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of our team
  • Excellent attendance, ability to multi-task, prioritize appropriately, and exercise good judgment
  • Must be willing to commit at least one year to the laboratory
  • Must be available to assist with weekend fish feeding - approximately 2 afternoons per month

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous Zebrafish husbandry experience and/or experience working with animals in a professional or academic environment
  • Working knowledge of the principles of molecular biology
  • Working knowledge of, or willingness to learn, how to troubleshoot the working parts of aquaria life support mechanical equipment such as plumbing, pumps, and filtration
