Research Laboratory Tech Sr
The laboratory of Jacob Mueller, in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan Medical School, is seeking a highly motivated senior research laboratory technician. Our laboratory utilizes molecular genetics and evolution to investigate the role of 'selfish' gene families in non-Mendelian inheritance and sperm development. This is an excellent position for a recent college graduate interested in gaining a few years of research experience before applying to graduate school. As such, the technician will have one or more independent research projects of their own and will work together with the PI to develop their project(s). The projects have the potential to be completed within one to two years, enabling the applicant the possibility of obtaining a publication before applying to graduate school. The position is thus an excellent opportunity to have regular and direct hands-on training from a PI and determine whether they are interested in pursuing a graduate degree. The position is heavily focused on the research project, with a smaller amount of effort devoted as the lab manager to laboratory support/maintenance.
The selected applicant will be involved in well-defined research projects and is expected to make original scientific contributions, as well as interpret and analyze results. The position will heavily focus on mouse molecular genetic techniques.
Experimental responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- PCR, RT-PCR, qtPCR, and DNA sequencing
- Gel electrophoresis
- Molecular cloning
- DNA and RNA isolation
- Fluorescence microscopy to visualize DNA-FISH and immunohistochemistry
- Breeding, genotyping, and dissecting mice
- Data analysis using a variety of software programs, and preparation of data for presentation
- Training of new lab members and functional supervision for undergraduate students
Non-experimental responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Routine laboratory maintenance of equipment
- Ordering of supplies and reagents
- Compliance with University of Michigan safety and animal care regulations
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in biology, genetics, or a related area of study
- 1 year of undergraduate research experience
- Willingness to work with mouse model system
- Experience with mouse husbandry
- Experience with PCR assays
- Experience with DNA extraction
- Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety protocols including biological and chemical safety
- Ability and motivation to learn new experimental approaches and safety protocols, and analyze and present data
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills
Desired Qualifications:
- 2 years or more of undergraduate wet lab experience
- Experience analyzing research data and preparing data for presentations
- Experience in training students and others on lab safety and on the application of new techniques
