James Cook University (JCU) is Australia’s only university dedicated to the Tropics, focused on creating positive outcomes for Northern Australia and tropical regions worldwide.

We are seeking a Research Manager to support and strengthen the research program of The Cairns Institute. Reporting to the Director, this role plays a key part in delivering strategic business development opportunities, supporting high-quality research outcomes, and ensuring contractual and governance risks are effectively managed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop and deliver business development opportunities and special projects that support the Institute’s strategic research objectives.
  • Manage and coordinate research program activities, including grant and project applications, funding agreements and contracts.
  • Collate and analyse research and publication data to inform strategic planning and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with academic researchers, government, industry and community partners to increase research partnerships and consultancy opportunities.
  • Ensure effective contract management and governance compliance across research projects.

About You

  • Postgraduate qualifications (or progress toward) in social sciences, education, business or a related field, aligned with HEWL 8 requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience managing research programs and identifying research and funding opportunities.
  • Proven experience in contract and project management, including governance and risk management.
  • High-level analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience with literature reviews and ethics applications is desirable.
