Duties & Responsibilities:

Since its inception in 1996, VCU College of Engineering has brought innovative, real-world engineering education to Central Virginia. Comprised of five different departments plus the Dean’s office, the College of Engineering enrolls more than 2,100 undergraduate and 538 graduate students in several degree programs supported by approximately 673 full time, part time, and student employees.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering within the VCU College of Engineering is seeking a Research Scientist.

This position will be responsible for:

• Overseeing ongoing research in the areas of Medical devices, AI and Machine Learning, Partnering with students (undergraduate and graduate) as well as faculty in the execution of existing research initiatives by supporting experimental design, implementation, and analysis.
• Aiding the identification, evaluation, and development (e.g. from brainstorming to proposal preparation) of new research horizons across the focus areas of the group. The position is highly encouraged to seek externally funded research.
• Documenting research findings and communicating results to internal and external team members and collaborators
• Publishing research findings.
• Supervising and maintaining the day-to-day operation of the equipment and infrastructure within the laboratory spaces including new user training, equipment scheduling, the construction of new custom experimental test stands, compliance with University/State/Federal safety standards, the strategic acquisition of new equipment, managing lab inventory, ordering, and receiving.
• Developing standard operating procedures and safety protocols for various systems including maintaining trained user databases and electronic access through university systems.
• This position will teach 2 courses per year in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. These courses will be at the undergraduate level consisting of fundamental courses (100-300 level) in the Electrical and Computer Engineering curricula. This position is split between research (75%) and instruction (25%).

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• Ph.D. in ECE, or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience that equates to a Ph.D.
• Experience with the maintenance, repair, and operation of equipment
• Demonstrated ability to publish research findings, preferably in high impact scientific journal
• Ability to work collaboratively with research teams to better assist them in accomplishing their goal
• Strong written/oral skills required, and ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience
• Ability to teach fundamental undergraduate courses in Electrical and Computer Engineering
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer engineering or a related discipline is preferred
• Professional experience beyond the Ph.D is preferred
• Previous experience working with students (undergraduate and graduate) as well as faculty in the execution of existing research initiatives.

Salary Range: $85,000 - $90,000
