Research Technician, Lemaire Lab
Job Summary
The laboratory focuses on the acquisition of cell identity during development and how these identities evolved with a focus on the nervous system. This technician position involves a combination of basic molecular work and animal work with marine invertebrates. The candidate should possess strong organizational, communication, and time management skills. Under general supervision, the candidate will assist the principal investigator by conducting experiments according to established protocols. Responsibilities include performing routine lab equipment maintenance, setting up and operating various scientific apparatus, caring for the animals, assisting with research projects, and conducting independent research. While prior basic laboratory experience is preferred, we are willing to train the successful applicant in the necessary skills.
Job Duties
- Performs molecular biology related experiments (molecular cloning, RNA isolation, PCR, RT-PCR), data analysis and management, and general lab management.
- Maintain equipment and basic reagents
- Maintains and keeps research records and logs. Compiles, processes and analyses data, inputs and retrieves data using computers.
- Follow existing research protocols and assisting in developing new research protocols.
- Maintains and organized and clean laboratory in accordance with SLU Health and Safety requirements.
- Animal care
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Broad knowledge involving laboratory techniques desired.
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work as a member of team.
- Ability to follow verbal and written communication instructions.
- Ability to tend to details, maintain records and inventories.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and use and a word processor and spreadsheet.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, chemistry or relevant experience. *This position is for a start-up project that is in the process of applying for grant funding, and therefore continuation in the position is contingent upon securing funding availability. This start-up role is anticipated to last for one year, with the possibility of going longer if a grant is secured.
