Position Highlights

The laboratory of Dr. Inna Gladysheva of the Department of Internal Medicine and Translational Cardiovascular Research Center (TCRC) at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix (COM-P) invites highly motivated candidates to apply for a Researcher/Scientist III position in her NIH-funded lab. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to research in the area of translational cardiovascular research with specific focus on cardiomyopathy and heart failure and related complications. The successful candidate should have training in the broad area of biomedical sciences and specifically, molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry. The candidate should also have experience with designing, organizing, managing and carrying out research in a molecular biology laboratory setting.

This position involves analyzing research hypotheses using controlled investigations, experiments and/or trials for research on cardiovascular disease using mouse models of cardiac pathology, with a goal toward translating basic science findings to clinically viable potential therapeutics. The position is best suited for someone who is detailed oriented, conscientious, and able to follow instructions and have the ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner, both orally and in writing. The Researcher/Scientist III will support various research activities, including performing laboratory techniques utilizing tissues and cultured cells and maintaining mouse colonies, performing/assisting in animal procedures. Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory experiments at a highly independent level under the guidance of senior researchers or principal investigators.
  • The experimental procedures include but not limited to:
    • qRT-PCR/PCR
    • SDS Page
    • Immunoblotting
    • Histological tissue preparations and imaging
    • Immunocytofluorescence staning and analysis of tissue and cells samples
    • ELISA and multiplex assay
    • Flow-cytometry
    • Molecular cloning and generation of DNA expression constructs
    • Cell culture
    • Development and preparation of adenoviruses and adeno-associated viruses for expression construct gene transfer.
    • Small animal (mouse) handling, blood and tissue collection and assisting in animal surgeries and function evaluation procedures
    • Animal colony maintenance and monitor/care animals during the study periods, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
    • Prepare samples, reagents, and equipment for experiments, ensuring proper calibration and maintenance.
  • Develop, plan, design, and conduct advanced, multi-disciplinary research. Review progress and evaluate results.
  • Formulate research methods, and develop or collaborate in the development of new techniques, methods, and equipment.
  • Recommend solutions for research methodology by interpreting principles and analyzing complex facts.
  • Data analysis, spreadsheet management, and data presentations.
  • Review and edit protocols to ensure coherence, completeness, and consistency.
  • Participate in the writing and supporting documents and figures preparation for publications, presentations and grant proposals.
  • Guide the work of others and/or provides guidance to a specialized laboratory or research area and train students and lower-level staff.
  • Attend weekly group-meetings and regularly present weekly progress on results.
  • Management of lab safety and approval protocols.
  • Coordinate laboratory work, including lab equipment management.
  • Manage daily laboratory operations, including supplies ordering and lab inventories related to cellular and molecular biology techniques that will include common use items (e.g., compressed gas, dry ice and liquid nitrogen).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of coordinating experiments, and completing analysis, statistics, and interpretation.
  • Skilled in manuscript writing and preparation for publication.
  • Ability to participate at scientific conferences and present findings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, molecular/cell biology or a related field, master's degree is preferred.
  • Two years experience performing the following biological techniques: Molecular biology, expression construct design, preparation and use, histochemistry, qRT-PCR, immunoblotting, immunocytofluorescence and related microscopy, cell culture for testing expression construct function.
