Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Department of Housing and Residence Life at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington houses approximately 5200 students in a combination of residence halls, suites, and apartments. In order to facilitate a positive living experience on the campus, a variety of staff are necessary to carry out the responsibilities. Full-time professional staff, student residence hall staff, and facilities staff work to develop an atmosphere conducive to academic and personal growth. It is the mission of the Department of Housing and Residence Life to appropriately challenge residents to develop to their full potential by supporting their educational and personal growth and development.

The Department of Housing and Residence Life strives to establish a satisfactory physical environment that emphasizes the utilization of human and material resources in an efficient manner. In order to facilitate each student's personal and academic growth, it is essential that a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment be provided. The Housing and Residence Life staff will maintain an environment that is conducive to educational excellence by providing academic support, educational opportunities, and challenges for individual residents. Opportunities for students to attain a greater appreciation and understanding of cultural and lifestyle differences and opportunities for leadership and self-governance roles are integral to the on-campus experience.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position:

UNC Wilmington prides itself on providing a 'high touch' institutional setting for its students. As a result, the Residence Coordinator is expected to be familiar with their residents while providing support and mentoring through consistent student interactions. The Residence Coordinator is also tasked with creating a community of respect and inclusiveness centered on UNCW's 'Seahawk Respect Compact'.

The primary responsibilities as the Residence Coordinator include:

  • Responsible for one of seven residential areas of between 400-660 residents.
  • Supervises and evaluates 8 - 15 Residents Assistants, 1 graduate assistant, and indirectly 10 - 30 Desk Receptionists.
  • Implements UNCW's co-curricular model to provide educational programming, intentional interactions, and a living community of learning, independence, and belonging.
  • Serves as a rotating crisis management contact for 100 residential students.
  • Functions as a university conduct officer in the Office of the Dean of Students adjudicating both housing and non-housing cases and ensures University Code of Conduct and HRL Community Standards are enforced/documented.
  • Manages a budget ranging from $7000 - $35,000 and must possess an understanding of departmental budgeting processes.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with colleagues across the Division of Student Affairs.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Master's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Master's degree in College Student Development, Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling or related field.
  • 1+ years of undergraduate or graduate staff experience in housing.
  • Experience with supervising college students, staff training/development, student group advising, crisis management.
  • Experience with budget management, operating 24/7 desks, facility management, handling/reporting Title IX situations, and working with University Police.
  • Experience building relationships with students, supervising and supporting students.
  • Ability to oversee hall programs and serve as the fiscal manager for the community.
  • Ability to manage conflicts and crisis situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with campus partners.
