General Summary

Resident Assistants (RAs) are representatives of the Office of Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs. RAs are student leaders and role models in making the college experience positive and enriching. The RA position requires strong relational abilities, organizational skills, and creative programming goals. RAs work in collaboration with campus resources and Student Affairs professionals to serve the mission of Indiana Tech in a timely, confidential, and professional manner. RAs report to and are supervised by the Area Coordinators, or the Director of Residence Life.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Community Development

  1. Maintain an atmosphere that is conducive to a successful academic and positive social environment
  2. Become acquainted and build rapport with each resident in their living area
  3. Learn the perspectives and attitudes of residents and address or mitigate concerns
  4. Navigate relationships, conflicts, and mediations within the residence hall community

Student Guidance

  1. Serve as a knowledgeable resource of IT’s services and guide students to supporting departments
  2. Demonstrate empathy and understanding of diverse identities to promote individual and communal well-being
  3. Be available and accessible for a minimum of eight hours each week to address student concerns, questions, and check-ins
  4. Hold regular intentional conversations with residents to promote academic success, connection to campus resources, and personal investment

Interpret & Explain University Policies and Expectations

  1. Maintain community expectations for shared spaces
  2. Respond to University policy violations or unacceptable behavior
  3. Promote peer accountability
  4. Conduct and document health & safety inspections monthly

Administration

  1. Submit incident reports, work requests, and duty logs
  2. Assist with check-in, check-out, and room condition reports
  3. Serve scheduled duty and desk assignments
  4. Communicate student concerns with Residence Life & Campus Security
  5. Maintain confidentiality with all students and incident information, following FERPA and University Policies

Programming

  1. Plan, facilitate, and assess community engagement initiatives; four events, two bulletin boards, door decorations, and committee initiatives
  2. Create educational programs that align with residence life learning objectives

Leadership Development

  1. Meet regularly with the residence life team to discuss residents, programming, and ongoing performance
  2. Participate in fall and spring training and bi-weekly all-staff meetings
  3. Attend leadership in-services

Qualifications

Academic:

  1. Enrolled as a full-time day student with residential experience at Indiana Tech’s Fort Wayne campus
  2. Achieved & maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.70
  3. Eligible to work in the United States
  4. Available for fall and spring semesters
  5. In good standing with the University community, without conduct concerns

Teamwork:

  1. Collaborative leadership
  2. Culturally sensitive & inclusive of the diversity that makes up our campus community
  3. Available to work evenings and weekends as assigned

Customer Service:

  1. Able to work with students, parents, employees, and constituents
  2. Willingness to creative problem solving
  3. Willingness to assist and serve, as needed

Availability:

  1. Attend fall & spring training
  2. Early arrival & late departure to assist with hall opening & closing
  3. Discuss additional work eligibility with the residence life team.
