Job Summary
The SafeState Environmental Health and Safety Consultant I provides independent, routine industrial hygiene consultation services including onsite visits to businesses and industries in Alabama.
Additional Department Summary
Performs duties as it relates to Environmental consulting. Performs consultation visits, technical field tests, surveys, inspections, and environmental monitoring services. Adheres to record keeping requirements. Trains and supervises student workers when they perform the same activities. Provides direct technical field assistance to University SafeState staff. This position is required to travel, including overnight and weekends.
Required Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and six (6) years of occupational safety experience; OR associate's degree and four (4) years of occupational safety experience; OR bachelor's degree in engineering, safety science, business, management, public health, or physical sciences and two (2) years of occupational safety experience; OR masters degree or higher in engineering, safety science, industrial management, public health, or physical sciences and some occupational safety experience.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications
Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Skills and Knowledge
Effective interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and US Department of Housing and Urban Development regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering, safety science, business, management, public health, physical sciences or closely related field. Experience performing X-ray fluorescence testing for lead in painted surfaces. Experience and familiarity with EPA and HUD sampling protocols related to sampling for lead in dust and soil. Familiarity with EPA, AHERA, ASHARA, and NESHAPS regulations, as well as EPA, OSHA and/or NIOSH analytical methods. Computer experience involving inputting of analytical data and laboratory database management.
