Position Summary Information

Position Summary

Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania is seeking applicants for a full-time, Tenure Track faculty member in the Department of Safety Management beginning August 2026. The BS in Safety Management is well known throughout the United States of America and has been noted as the premier safety program among all safety degrees. The Department has five safety labs and four traditional classrooms.

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Safety Management at Slippery Rock University meets the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) requirements as a Qualified Academic Program (QAP). The Safety Management Major at SRU is an Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) Board-approved degree program. The major is based on safety management concepts with technical elements incorporated throughout the curriculum.

The successful applicant must have the knowledge and experience needed to teach a variety of undergraduate safety courses. Primary courses: Intro to Safety and Security in the Workplace, as well as other courses such as Legislative Compliance-General Industry, Construction Safety, Principles of Industrial Hygiene I & II, Hazardous Materials and Waste Management, Comprehensive Emergency Management and Fire Abatement, Ergonomics, Incident Investigation, Contemporary Issues in Safety, Motor Fleet, Safety Training, and Safety Management. Must also provide academic advisement, pursue scholarly work, and participate in service to the Department, University, and Community.

Completion of a doctoral degree is required to be tenured at the end of the five-year probationary process. Documentation evidencing enrollment in a Doctoral Program must be provided prior to appointment.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree required at time of appointment (at least one degree must be in safety or a closely related field such as Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, etc.). Degrees must be from a University or College that is accredited by one of the seven active regional accrediting agencies for educational institutions in the US: MSCHE, NEASC, HLC, NAC, SACS, WASC, or ACCJC.

Safety Management philosophy required. The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to the education of diverse populations. A minimum of five current years in a full-time safety professional position (external to the classroom or laboratory) related to the courses to be taught, is required. A successful performance in an interview and teaching demonstration.

Preferred Qualifications

Current relevant successful full-time safety teaching experience at the college level with seven years of previous relevant professional safety applied experience OR current relevant full-time professional safety applied experience (seven years) related to content areas of courses to be taught. CSP, CIH, CSHM or other relevant safety certifications preferred. Preferred experience and knowledge in current safety practices and security as well Legislative Compliance-General Industry, Construction Safety, Principles of Industrial Hygiene I & II, Hazardous Materials and Waste Management, Comprehensive Emergency Management and Fire Abatement, Ergonomics, Incident Investigation, Contemporary Issues in Safety, Motor Fleet, Safety Training, Safety Management. Enrolled in a Doctoral program.
