Job Description
Search for Instructor, Assistant or Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health Professions, Birmingham, Alabama.
THE SEARCH
Candidates must have an earned research doctorate (e.g., PhD, DSc, ScD) from an accredited university, or consideration for those with a relevant master's degree currently enrolled in a doctoral research degree. Only candidates who are occupational therapy practitioners with a doctoral degree may teach occupational therapy content within the department's Clinical Doctorate in Occupational Therapy program, per ACOTE standards.
Candidates should have experience developing and overseeing programs to enhance healing environments for patients, clients, and families in a large medical health center. Preference is given to applicants with experience in teaching arts and creativity, arts administration, arts education, arts in medicine, and clinical mental health counseling.
This position combines faculty responsibilities with 0.5 FTE as the Senior Director of UAB Arts in Medicine (AIM). The selected candidate will provide strategic leadership and oversight for AIM's programming, staff, partnerships, and community engagement.
Preferred qualifications include experience in developing and managing large-scale arts in health programs that enhance healing environments and support well-being. The candidate should demonstrate ability to secure funding through grants, philanthropy, and institutional support, expertise in interdisciplinary collaboration, strong supervisory and mentorship skills, and public speaking for advocacy.
The department seeks candidates with success in working with diverse populations, various teaching methods, and contributions to diversity and excellence through research, teaching, and service. The successful candidate should be committed to excellence in teaching, mentoring diverse students, and working with faculty, staff, and clinical partners across disciplines.
Primary Responsibilities - Faculty, Department of Occupational Therapy (0.5 FTE)
As Faculty (0.5 FTE), the selected candidate will:
- Lead development of innovative undergraduate and post-professional programming on arts and creativity supporting healing environments.
- Play a central role in developing a post-professional certificate in Arts Integration in Health.
- Support undergraduate education in the Blazer Core Curriculum focused on health and wellness.
- Contribute to teaching creative occupations and mental health education in courses.
- Mentor and advise students to promote scholarships and programming on health and well-being through arts.
- Contribute to scholarship in integrating arts and creativity for health and wellness, including research projects, funding proposals, presentations, and publications.
- Participate in department, school, community, and national service activities.
Primary Responsibilities - UAB Arts in Medicine (AIM) (0.5 FTE)
As Director of UAB Arts in Medicine (AIM), the selected candidate will:
- Oversee design, implementation, and evaluation of arts in health programs enhancing healing environments.
- Lead planning and execution of performances, exhibitions, and workshops in healthcare and community settings, collaborating with artists and professionals.
- Shape AIM's strategic direction, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations.
- Work on resource development, fiscal oversight, and funding opportunities.
- Provide mentorship and leadership support to AIM staff, interns, and volunteers.
Required Qualifications
PhD or consideration for those with a relevant master's degree currently enrolled in an earned doctoral research degree.
Preferred Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess proven leadership abilities to enhance programs and foster collaborations.
