School Research Grant Administrator

School Research Grant Administrator

Applications are invited for the role of School Research Grant Administrator within the School of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

This is a new post primarily dedicated to support research grant application and administration and research related objectives at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, whilst also supporting other institutions across the School of the Humanities and Social Sciences as part of a wider, flexible team.

The McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research is the shared intellectual home for archaeologists at Cambridge and their collaborators, with researchers working on all aspects of the human past, across time and space. The Institute acts as:

  • a research facilitator of the Department of Archaeology, supporting the work of Department staff, postdoctoral fellows and students
  • as an interdisciplinary centre for archaeology in Collegiate Cambridge, serving staff in a variety of departments, faculties, museums and colleges
  • as a postdoctoral research institute within the Department of Archaeology, it supports archaeological fieldwork, other archaeological research, research fellows, visiting scholars, conferences and publications

Cambridge is home to one of the world's largest communities of archaeological researchers and biological anthropologists. The Institute, led by its Director Professor Cyprian Broodbank, is currently one of the largest postdoctoral research hubs in Europe and is one of the most active archaeology communities in the UK in terms of grant-funding. It also facilitates internal funding streams which regularly support pilot work for large external applications. As part of the wider Department of Archaeology, it is often at the top of the UK and world University ranking lists.

The School Research Grant Administrator will:

  • provide financial and administrative support and guidance across the full grant lifecycle to academic, research and administrative staff, to enable effective and efficient grant management.
  • work with relevant staff to support the development of grant applications and to manage grants post award, maximising income and mitigating risk, using University systems such as Worktribe, CHRIS and CUFS.
  • be an excellent communicator with the confidence to relate to a wide range of people and to be an effective team player with a flexible approach.
  • possess high level organisation and prioritisation skills, with the ability to take initiative and prioritise a varied workload to meet deadlines.
  • provide advice, and collaboratively support training and networking opportunities for other SRGAs within the School.
  • line manage one School Research Grant Assistant within the team.

The successful applicant will join a team of 12 experienced research grant personnel, led by the School Research Grant Manager, working collaboratively across the School of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Although experience in a research support role is advantageous, applications from individuals with transferable skills are welcome, since full training in research grant systems and process will be provided where required.

This is a full time role, based at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, part of the Department of Archaeology on the Downing Site in central Cambridge, and the School of the Humanities and Social Sciences School Office at 17 Mill Lane. It is expected that the working pattern will include two days at the McDonald Institute, one in the School Office, with the opportunity to work remotely on two days. Hours and working pattern can be discussed at interview.

Closing date for Applications is Sunday 11th January 2026. Interviews will be held in the week commencing 19th January 2026.
