Job Summary:
Join the Colorado School of Public Health as a Senior Database Specialist (Information Technology Senior Professional). This position is a key member of the school's Lifecourse Epidemiology of Adiposity and Diabetes (LEAD) Center, a multidisciplinary research center that investigates and seeks to understand the developmental origins of health and disease, particularly obesity, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and the complex interplay of environmental exposures, genetic, and epigenetic processes in critical developmental periods across the lifecourse.
The Senior Database Specialist will perform duties to support the center's RedCap databases across multiple studies. Main responsibilities include complex RedCap database architecture creation, design, and maintenance, RedCap survey design and implementation, data curation and reporting for multiple studies, quality assurance/control, and assisting with managing the LEAD data warehouse.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and program RedCap database architecture.
- Monitor daily database activities and implement enhancements as necessary.
- Assist with staff support and training in database features and development, including troubleshooting database and workflow issues that arise during field data collection and ongoing study operations.
- Produce data checks and reports to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
- Curate datasets for study personnel and investigators.
- Develop clear and thorough documentation for work produced and study processes for transparency and replicability.
This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position that reports to the Senior Research Scientist.
Work Location: On Site - This role is expected to work onsite and is located at the CU Anschutz Campus in Aurora, CO.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, data science or a directly related field from an accredited institution
- At least 2 years of experience in REDCap database design and architecture construction of complete standalone databases
- At least 2 years of experience working in a research setting involving human subjects and adherence to research or clinical protocols
- Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on large, multi-site consortium research studies and their ancillary studies, including collaborating with coordinating centers and centralized data analysis centers.
- Database management expertise with creating and maintaining SQL Server and/or MS Access, coding in SAS and/or R, and producing data documentation for these products and processes.
- Experience partnering with front-end study team(s) to develop, implement, and refine database-supported workflows related to recruitment, enrollment, data collection, and other core research activities to ensure alignment between data systems and operational processes.
- Bilingual English and Spanish speaking
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to design, build, maintain, and quality control complex REDCap projects, including developing single time point and longitudinal databases, creating forms (including repeating instruments), reporting, exporting/importing data, e.g. EPIC, and implementing the majority of available advanced functionality in REDCap, including alerts, automated survey invitations, survey queue and form display/validation rule logic, and the E-consent framework.
- Advanced database development, maintenance, QA/QC, and reporting skills in REDCap, and intermediate to advanced skills with relational databases, like MS Access and SQL server.
- Advanced abilities to perform database management tasks in SAS and/or R, and create thorough data documentation and standard operating procedures for research data processes.
- Excellent data stewardship skills for maintaining data integrity and upholding regulatory and HIPAA compliance of Protected Health Information.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and communicate solutions effectively to diverse audiences, and to collaborate with cross-functional teams including principal investigators, project managers, data analysts, and research specialists.
- Advanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze complex technical and operational challenges and develop effective, scalable solutions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution and across cross-functional research teams.
- Demonstrated experience in fostering a community that values a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
