Senior IT Engineer

Senior IT Engineer

Join the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. The largest Department in the University, we have a long record of world-leading teaching and research across the engineering disciplines, and we continue to break new ground in response to the challenges of today.

As Senior IT Engineer, you will be embedded in the Department's Information Engineering Division. The Division's work spans the boundary between traditional Computer Science and Engineering Departments, focusing on topics including intelligent interactive systems and machine learning, medical imaging, signal analysis and computer vision and robotics. These are themes driving developments in today's world, and you will be working up close with leading researchers and teachers to support them.

You will be an experienced system administrator, with a focus on Linux and with practical experience of interoperability in a mixed environment. You will be embedded in the Department's Information Engineering Division alongside another Senior IT Engineer, both working as members of the Department's Information and Computing Services group (ICS). ICS comprises approximately 30 IT professionals in total, working closely in teams focused on user support, infrastructure, AV, research support and DevOps.

The Information Engineering Division's IT estate includes a large number Linux workstations and servers (Ubuntu), with both academic and administrative use of Macs and Windows, as well. The Division's research and teaching bring a strong requirement for GPU compute and mass data storage, with GPU workstations across large parts of the Division, HPC clusters (both on-premises and cloud-based) and large-scale file servers. In this environment, you will be responsible for the support and development of the Division's IT estate, working closely with academics and researchers, and advising them on solutions, hardware purchases and best practice. There is an increasing emphasis on secure computing, and you will implement and promote cyber security measures across the Division, working in conjunction with ICS colleagues.

You will be educated to degree level or have an equivalent level of experience. The role requires someone with demonstrable experience of Linux system administration and configuration management, and management of technical activities. In addition to strong planning and time-management skills, you will have excellent spoken and written communication. You will also have hands-on experience of hardware maintenance and troubleshooting. The role will require you to work as part of a team, and to build relationships with people at all levels of the Department.

You will also work closely with other teams in ICS, building relationships with them and people at all levels in the Department, and with the opportunity to participate in cross-team projects to develop ICS's work. ICS is committed to continuing professional development for its staff, and you will have the opportunity to undertake training and certification as part of your role.

This role is intended to be full-time, Monday-Friday, but applications from candidates wishing to work part-time will also be considered.
