For Band 9 Senior Lecturer of Civil Engineering

The School of Engineering and Technology is seeking to appoint a senior lecturer in Civil Engineering, significantly contributing towards the establishment and further development of a new Civil Engineering Programme. This post will play a leading role in the creation and delivery of modules related to civil engineering design, resilient infrastructures, and curriculum development in alignment with the industry needs. The candidate is expected to be an established expert in one or more subject areas in Civil Engineering (design expertise and experience are essential) and with the capability to lead and make significant contributions towards the new educational and research developments.

The postholder will work closely with internal and external partners to ensure that the new programmes meet the standard of modern engineering practice and the needs of local and national industry. This is an important role in establishing a strong foundation for the Civil Engineering programme, the post holder will be heavily involved in the preparation and eventual submission and achievement of accredited status.

The post holder is expected to have knowledge, understanding and experience of delivering specialist and general course material to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong track record of securing external research funding from government and private sources and skills to develop internal and external collaborations to deliver innovative solutions to real-world engineering challenges.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post

  • Leading the design of inclusive and accessible learning resources for both UG and PGT programmes in Civil Engineering.
  • Providing outstanding teaching using contemporary pedagogy, and innovative delivery methods in the broad area of civil engineering with a particular focus on engineering design, sustainable construction, and resilient infrastructure.
  • Achieving external impact through their research or scholarship activities, e.g. Publication in academic journals in topics relevant to civil engineering discipline and associated areas, leading to significant contributions to the REF 2029 and beyond
  • Securing significant external competitive research grants to support the research developments in Civil Engineering
  • Establishing research and collaborative partnerships with external bodies, and developing enterprise activity in the civil engineering areas
  • Supervising Master level and PhD level research students to completion
  • Mentoring junior academic colleagues in the subject area.
  • Contributing to school’s objectives in relation to NSS (and other surveys), TEF and student recruitment and retention.
  • Engage in teaching scholarship, including curriculum development, digital learning innovation, and student support.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in programme coordination and assessment.
  • Actively participate in department and School-level activities, including Open Days and Boards of Study.

Person Specification

  • A PhD, or equivalent qualification in an area of Civil Engineering.
  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (Senior fellowship is desirable).
  • Demonstrated evidence of a distinguished and active track record of teaching expertise in a range of areas in civil engineering and sustainable construction, particularly on engineering design.
  • Experience in curriculum development and teaching methodology for topics and programs of study, including reviews and internal and external accreditation activities.
  • An established research reputation in civil engineering relevant to sustainable construction and engineering that is evidenced by high quality publications, and the attraction of significant amount of external grants.
  • Demonstrated track record of establishing effective research collaborations with external partners.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
