The Godwin Stable Isotope Laboratory in the Department of Earth Sciences is seeking a Senior Research Laboratory Technician to support research in climate change, ocean geochemistry, and deep-sea sediments.

The post will focus on routine sample preparation, instrument operation, and day-to-day laboratory support. The successful candidate will help ensure the smooth running of the laboratory, support high-throughput analysis, and maintain the quality of results. Duties will include preparing and processing samples using established protocols, operating and monitoring isotope mass spectrometers and related equipment, undertaking routine maintenance and troubleshooting, maintaining laboratory records, ensuring compliance with health and safety procedures, and supporting the training of new users in standard techniques.

Applicants must have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific field, practical laboratory experience that includes sample preparation and routine use of instrumentation. They should be able to work accurately and consistently with excellent attention to detail, demonstrate sound problem-solving skills, and have strong organisational and communication abilities. A commitment to safe laboratory practice and accurate record keeping, as well as the ability to work as part of a team in a busy shared environment, are also required.

Desirable experience includes working with isotope ratio mass spectrometry or similar analytical instruments, high-throughput sample preparation and analysis and familiarity with vacuum or gas-handling systems.

This hands-on role would suit someone with experience in laboratory support or analytical technician positions who enjoys practical laboratory work. It offers the opportunity to develop long-term expertise in isotope science within a supportive technical team.
