A recruitment and selection process is open, intending to hire one Senior Technician within the framework of the " Leveraging Interpretable Machine Learning Approaches to Improve Child Health for All: From Single Diseases to Multimorbidity " project, reference NFRFE-[contact details available in the full listing], at the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto, funded by the Tri-Agency Institutional Program Secretariat: New Frontiers in Research Fund – Exploration, Toronto.
Application period: August 14 to September 01, 2026
1. Applicable legislation
Under the terms of the Código do Trabalho, approved by Lei 7/2009, of 12 February, it is hereby announced that a recruitment and selection process has been opened for the recruitment of a Senior Technician under an individual employment contract under private law, for an indefinite term, during the term of the aforementioned project, for the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto.
2. Admission requirements
All individuals of legal age, with the following mandatory requirements, may apply:
- Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in Health Sciences or related fields
If the degree has been obtained in a higher education institution outside Portugal, it needs to be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution as stated in article 25 of Decreto-Lei n.º 66/2018, of August 16, that approves the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions and point e) of no. 2 of article 4 of Decreto-Lei n.º 60/2018, de August 3rd, with the requirement that any formal procedures established there are completed at the moment of hiring.
3. Preferred conditions
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate:
- a. PhD in Health Sciences and/or related fields;
- b. Demonstrated scientific output through publications in international peer-reviewed indexed journals;
- c. Experience in the harmonization, management, and analysis of databases from longitudinal epidemiological studies, particularly population-based cohorts;
- d. Research experience in the field of exposome and environmental epidemiology, including experience in advanced statistical analysis of exposome data;
- e. Experience in longitudinal analysis and/or identification of patterns or trajectories over time in epidemiological studies;
- f. Proficiency in Portuguese and English, both oral and written.
4. Work plan
The functions to be performed include planning and executing various activities related to:
- a) Preparation, harmonization, and management of data from the Geração XXI (G21) cohort relevant to the scientific objectives of the project;
- b) Statistical analysis of longitudinal quantitative and exposome data;
- c) Preparation of presentations, reports, and scientific publications resulting from the project;
- d) Scientific and technical coordination with the Canadian team, including participation in working meetings and discussion of methods, analyses, and results.
5. Place of work
The work will be conducted at Instituto de Saúde Pública da Universidade do Porto (ISPUP), under the supervision of Doctor Susana Santos.
6. Remuneration and Contract Duration
The normal weekly working period is forty hours a week, with a basic monthly salary of €1.709,68. The remuneration will be framed within the salary level corresponding to the second position in the professional category of Senior Technician in the Single Salary Table, corresponding to salary level 20, plus the meal allowance.
The uncertain term contract will last for as long as the relevant justification exists, whose duration may not exceed four years, as provided in n.º 5 do artigo 148º do Código do Trabalho, and terminating by lapsing under the terms and conditions set out in Artigo 345º of Código do Trabalho.
7. Selection methods
Selection will be based on curriculum evaluation (CE) and, if deemed necessary by the jury, a selection interview (I) with the top 3 candidates whose score in the curriculum evaluation is equal to or greater than ten points. The final score will be calculated using the following formula: 0,7 x CE + 0,3 x II, on a scale of 0-20 points. If no interview is conducted, the final score will be the same as the CE score.
The criteria for curriculum evaluation are (0 to 20 points):
- a) Academic qualifications (max. 4 points):
- PhD in the fields of Health Sciences and/or related areas: up to 1 point;
- Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the fields of Health Sciences and/or related areas: up to 3 points.
- b) Scientific output demonstrated through publications in indexed international peer-reviewed journals (max. 3 points):
- Scientific output relevant to the subject matter of the work plan, taking into consideration the number, quality, and relevance of the publications: up to 2 points;
- Scientific output not directly related to the subject matter of the work plan: up to 1 point.
- c) Experience in the harmonisation, management, and analysis of databases from longitudinal epidemiological studies, particularly population-based cohorts (max. 4 points):
- Experience in longitudinal epidemiological studies and/or population-based cohorts, nationally and/or internationally: up to 2 points;
- Experience in the harmonisation, management, and analysis of data from longitudinal epidemiological studies and/or population-based cohorts: up to 2 points.
- d) Research experience in the field of exposome and environmental epidemiology, including experience in advanced statistical analysis of exposome data (max. 7 points):
- Experience in applying the exposome concept and approach in scientific studies: up to 3 points;
- Experience in advanced statistical analysis of exposome data: up to 3 points;
- Research experience in the field of environmental epidemiology: up to 1 point.
- e) Experience in longitudinal analysis and/or identification of patterns or trajectories over time in epidemiological studies (max. 2 points):
- Experience in analysing the evolution of exposures, behaviours, health conditions, or other indicators over time, including the identification of patterns and/or trajectories: up to 2 points.
The criteria for the selection interview, if conducted, will be (0 to 20 points):
- a) Professional attitude suited to the responsibilities and duties of the position (teamwork, initiative, autonomy, organizational skills, and problem-solving ability) (4 points);
- b) Motivation to perform the duties of the position (4 points);
- c) Specific knowledge relevant to the position (8 points);
- d) Communication skills, particularly in english (4 points).

9. Formalization of applications
The applications should be formalized, obligatorily, via email by September 01, 2026 to the address candidaturas@ispup.up.pt, with the reference “Senior Technician – NFRFE-2024-00327” in the subject, accompanied by the following documents, of mandatory presentation:
- a) Curriculum Vitae;
- b) Qualification certificate with the final classification obtained and the respective academic degree recognition by a Portuguese higher education institution (if applicable).
- c) Letter of motivation for the position in question, as well as a reference to the availability to start functions;
- d) Other documents deemed relevant by the candidate.
10. Failure to present the documents identified above in the application will determine the administrative exclusion of the candidates.
11. Selection will be based on Curriculum Evaluation (CE) and eventually complemented by a Professional Interview (I) with the three best-ranked candidates, if the Selection Committee deems it necessary. The respective assessment and weighting criteria for Curriculum Evaluation and any Professional Interview, including the respective grading formula, are set out in the minutes of the Selection Committee's meeting criteria.
12. Failure of candidates to attend the possible interview phase of the selection process is equivalent to withdrawing from the competition, leading to the exclusion from the procedure.
13. If none of the candidates demonstrates having the profile indicated for carrying out the work plan, the Selection Committee reserves the right not to allocate the vacancy in the competition.
14. Form of advertising/notification of results
The final results of the evaluation will be disclosed by sending the minutes via email provided at the time of application. The candidates have a period of 10 working days, counting from the day immediately after the notification, to give their opinion, if they wish, in a prior hearing.
15. ISPUP is free to fill the position or not and may suspend or terminate the process at any time, informing all candidates.
